Doha, Qatar, October 20, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and Hamad Medical Corporation of Qatar have joined hands to sharpen their role in helping Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to combat world hunger.

On the eve of the World Food Day, IIMSAM led by its Goodwill Ambassador, His Excellency, Dr. Naseer S Homoud organized a joint press conference here in Doha today at La Cigale Hotel along with Hamad Medical Corporation giving impetus to IIMSAM’s objectives and his noble mission of forming a comprehensive alliance to cope up with global problem of food hunger.

The theme for this year's WFD is 'World Food Scarcity : The Challenges Of Climate Change And Bio Energy' as there is a strong need to expand global awareness to reduce the effect of severe climate patterns on agriculture and the impact of bio fuels on food production.

The United Nations Agency, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), celebrates each year every October 16 the World Food Day (WFD), the day on which the organization was founded in 1945. This Day is observed as World Food Day (WFD) in about 150 countries all over the world.

Acting on the concept of Working together for an International Alliance against Hunger, IIMSAM trusts that the vast network of HMC can help raise awareness of food and poverty related issues that affect so many people throughout the world

The two organisations believe that the joint actions and strategies may be beneficial while raising awareness about this year theme and in advocating for the fight against hunger and towards the achievement of the first Millennium Development Goal (MDGs) to reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger and poverty in the world by 2015.

IIMSAM reiterated its continuous support to HMC and its allied organizations for the fulfillment of their noble objectives and reaching their international social concerns.

Speaking on the occasion, IIMSAM’s Goodwill Ambassador, His Excellency Dr. Naseer S Homoud pledged to support solidarity campaigns mounted by the United Nations including a number of initiatives such as national or regional Food Security Programmes, cultural and sporting events held to promote development of agriculture, nutrition and the environment.

During his brief address to the media, he applauded the role of Qatar at International level under the visionary leadership of His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al- Thani to eradicate all sort of problems being faced by the humanity.

Replying to a question asked by a journalist, Dr. Naseer S Homoud said Global warming and the bio fuel boom are threatening to push the number of hungry even higher in times to come. During 2007 alone, around 50 million more have been added to the rank of the world's hungry due to rising prices, thus pushing the number of unfed to about 900 millions.
