Austin, TX, October 22, 2008 --(PR.com)-- The official grand opening of Austin Art Space on November 7, 2008 will celebrate the success and growth of a concept started in 2004 as Artspoken Gallery. Three of the founding artists: Valerie Walden, Jan Knox and Rebecca Bennett expanded on the experiences there to create a unique art venue in north Austin. The new gallery and studios are specifically designed as a cooperative space for established and emerging artists to create, collaborate and present their work. There are nine artists-in-residence working in the retail storefront.

The grand opening will be a catharsis of sorts for the dedicated, prolific resident artists. The very first exhibit to be held in the new space, entitled “9 Lives in Art” will be devoted entirely to their artwork, and all will attend the opening. The gallery will be hung to capacity with paintings that range from the literal to the abstract, from oils and pastels to mixed media and collage, from the domineering to the diminutive. The working studio space will handle the overflow artwork and will be open to the public for viewing. In all, over 100 pieces will be on display.

Valerie Walden, the manager of the new co-op said, “We could not be more excited about the opening. This has been months in the planning. It’s the first time we’ve all shown our work together. It is more than art; it’s our lives reflected through art. We hope Austin Art Space will become an essential part of the local art scene.”

A large crowd of patrons, local artists and friends are expected to attend the wine and hors d’oeuvres reception. Collectively, the artists are members of numerous art groups on the local and regional level including the Austin Visual Arts Association, the Austin Pastel Society, the Southwest Pastel Society, Plein Air Austin and the Waterloo Watercolor Group. Many of the artists have an enthusiastic following of art lovers including regular patrons of the former Artspoken that will turn out in support of the new endeavor.

The grand opening festivities will be held from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Friday, November 7 in the new space on Northcross Drive, behind Northcross Mall and is open to all patrons. An invitation-only preview for special guests will be held from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Ten percent of the proceeds from all art sales that day will be donated to the American Red Cross for victims of Hurricane Ike.

“9 Lives in Art” will run through November 29. December 5-21 the co-op will continue a tradition from Artspoken by holding the Fourth Annual “12 Buy” Show -- a juried exhibition and sale of more than 100 works no larger that 12”x12” created by artists from all over the U.S. The small size makes the art more affordable for holiday gift giving. The gallery has already scheduled several solo artists’ exhibits in January and February 2009. A complete exhibit calendar may be found at www.austinartspace.com.
