Mednovus Ferromagnetic Detection Products Help MRI Providers Meet New Joint Commission Environment of Care (EC) Standards

New safety requirements for MRI providers will take effect in January and Mednovus SAFESCAN products are helping imaging centers comply.

Leucadia, CA, November 17, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Starting in January of 2009, healthcare providers accredited by the Joint Commission will need to conform with new Environment of Care (EC) standards for the protection of patient safety.

For MRI providers, this means responding to the Joint Commission's Sentinel Event Alert #38 on MRI Accidents and Injuries. One of the recommendations of the Alert is to use ferromagnetic detection systems, such as Mednovus' hand-held Target Scanner(TM) and pass-through MRI Sentinel(R) portals, to help keep magnet-homing metal objects out of the MRI room.

The new Environment of Care standard references the American College of Radiology's ACR Guidance Document for Safe MR Practices: 2007, which, like the Joint Commission's own alert, calls for the use of ferromagnetic detection.

The Mednovus products, currently deployed in hundreds of MRI locations across the U.S., will help Joint Commission accredited providers respond to the new requirements.

"We hope MRI providers use Mednovus ferromagnetic pre-screening tools to help improve safety for patients and staff, but the conformance with accreditation standards or even the reduction of financial losses from accidents are also real, tangible benefits for our customers," offered Tobias Gilk, President and MRI Safety Director of Mednovus.

Available in multiple formats, and at a range of prices, Mednovus ferromagnetic detection instruments are suited for both hospital-based and outpatient imaging providers.

"One in three Joint Commission accredited MRI sites may be up for a 'surprise inspection' in 2009. We want to do everything we can to help them meet the safety objectives of the new Environment of Care standards for MRI," stated Gilk.
