About Michael Whelan

Over the last 30 years, Michael Whelan has become one of the world’s premier fantasy and science fiction artists and is arguably the most honored artist in his field having won an unprecedented 15 Hugo Awards, 3 World Fantasy awards, as well as the Superhugo naming Whelan the best artist of the last 50 years. In addition to cover art for novels by Stephen King, Isaac Asimov and Larry Niven, Whelan’s has been commissioned work by every major U.S. book publisher as well as a diverse and lengthy list of other companies including National Geographic, Roadrunner Records, and the Franklin Mint.

The readers of Locus Magazine have named Whelan Best Professional Artist 26 times in their annual poll. He has also been named a Grand Master by the “Spectrum Annual of the Best in Contemporary Fantasy Art,” and his painting ISLAND is the cover art for this year’s volume. His many other awards include 12 Chesleys from the Association of Science Fiction Artists, a Gold Medal from the society of Illustrators and a Grumbacher Gold Medal.

Michael has had 4 art books published as well as numerous limited edition prints, posters, calendars, and licensed products such as greeting cards, t-shirt and sculptures. He is a member of the Graphic Artist Guild and the Society of Illustrations in New York City, and he is an Advisor to the Masters in Fine Arts program at Western Connecticut State University in Dan Bury, Connecticut. He was also a founding advisor to the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle, Washington.

Michael Whelan’s cover art initially appeals to the viewer because of its eye-catching color and composition, but it also contains layers of meaning waiting to be discovered and explored. He enjoyed the challenge of bringing an author’s words to life, but for several years he has also devoted time to his own visions. Theses “gallery” paintings have brought him to the attention of many collectors in the fine art world and he is now devoting his time to these more personal works.
