NumeriX Deploys Agilis's Orion Network Licensing Platform with Several License Models; Case Study Published

Santa Clara, CA, December 11, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Agilis Software today announced that NumeriX has selected Agilis's Orion Network Licensing Platform to manage subscription licenses for their award-winning pricing and risk analytics solutions used by major financial institutions worldwide, including ING, Bloomberg and Nomura Japan. Several Orion-based license deployment models are now in production, including automatic license activation over the Internet, user self-service license activation from a web browser, automated activation via HTTP proxy server or the Orion License Proxy Server, and re-distribution of the Orion License Server to manage floating licenses over end-users' internal networks.

NumeriX's licensing challenges include deployment into very security-conscious financial institutions that allow limited or no Internet connectivity from their internal systems, ensuring NumeriX's high-value products are secure against piracy or 'honest abuse', supporting a range of platforms including C#, Java and C/C++ on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, Linux, Solaris SPARC, Solaris i86 and AIX, and flexible license configuration with over 50 options to configure for each subscription license.

For the majority of NumeriX's customers the licenses are automatically activated over the Internet, and simultaneously locked to their host systems, with Agilis's 'Fuzzy Fingerprinting' mechanism providing some tolerance for subsequent minor upgrades to the user's system. For some customers who block direct Internet access from their systems the NumeriX licenses can still be automatically activated thanks to Orion's direct support for HTTP Proxy Servers, and the Orion License Proxy Server. If none of these approaches is available, the user obtains their license using Orion's self-service 'sneakernet' activation process via file transfer from any web browser.

For a strategic NumeriX partner a special approach was developed in collaboration with Agilis. This partner markets financial applications and online services that are accessed through proprietary terminals installed at their end customer sites, and embeds NumeriX components, which are license-protected with Orion product activation technology. The partner restricts access over the Internet to their own server machines – that is, the terminals cannot communicate directly over the Internet, and they cannot communicate with any web site other than the partner’s own. The solution was to automatically activate licenses by routing the activation request from the NumeriX component to the custom HTTP proxy server embedded in the partner's terminal, then to an Orion Proxy Server installed on the partner's premises, and on to the Orion License Server installed at NumeriX.

All these approaches allow the end-users to activate their licenses, easily upgrade their licenses and renew their subscription, and move their licenses to other machines using Orion's provision for secure user self-service license relocation.

For the remaining few customers who allow no external communication whatsoever NumeriX simply re-distributes the Orion Server. Once installed on the end-customer's internal worldwide network a single Orion Server manages all their licenses with no external communication required. As Saeed Siddiqui, Vice President of QA for NumeriX, observed: “If we see deployment issues with a NumeriX-hosted server, we have the option of offering floating licensing from a redistributed server. We can also offer node-locked licensing from this redistributed server in future". They did not need to re-engineer their products to support floating licensing, as Siddiqui noted: "Since Orion supports Internet-based product activation and floating licensing with the same client library and a single application integration, we didn’t have to ask Engineering to make changes to our application when we added licensing from a redistributed server”.

Dominic Haigh, VP of Agilis, commented: "NumeriX had very demanding requirements for license management, and we are pleased our standard Orion Network Licensing Platform solution was able to meet all their needs, enabling NumeriX to employ a single licensing solution for all their customers no matter how challenging the deployment scenarios".
