Rising from the Ashes – Sylmar Girl Performs Lead Role in 11th Season of "the Snow Queen"

Rebecca Eberhard’s house is still standing as she dances the role of Gerda for the second year.

La Canada Flintridge, CA, December 11, 2008 --(PR.com)-- “The fires have been a tragedy for so many people. I am so lucky – not just to have a house, but to have an opportunity to bring an uplifting message to audiences in the California Contemporary Ballet’s production of ‘The Snow Queen’.” said 15-year-old Rebecca Eberhard.

Evacuated twice in the October and November Sylmar fires and living next to the Fire Department’s command center in El Cariso Community Park during the most recent conflagration, Rebecca somehow maintained the intense rehearsal schedule required to dance the role of Gerda in the 11th season of the winter-time ballet, “The Snow Queen.”

Ms. Eberhard, who refused to miss a single rehearsal due to her evacuation, says, “The police were driving up my street with bullhorns commanding that everyone leave immediately. It was scary and at first I didn’t know what to bring. All I could think of was my rehearsals for Snow Queen. All I could think to take from my house was my Pointe shoes and dancewear.”

A whole new era of the Snow Queen will dawn December 19th through December 21st at the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Theatre at 1500 North Verdugo Blvd. in Glendale, CA. Tickets are available on-line at www.ccballet.net or by calling 818-790-7924. For those who have never experienced it, “The Snow Queen ballet”, based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, is the triumph of good over evil and is a refreshing alternative to the many Nutcrackers available during the holidays.

Rebecca, now in her second year in the lead role, is joined by Filip Stanek, a guest artist from the Czech Republic, also in his second year in the lead role of Kia. Mr. Stanek could not arrive until after Thanksgiving and the two dance partners are rehearsing intensively to be prepared by show time, as they have many scenes where they work together. The remainder of the cast of 70 comes from the Foothill communities of Glendale, Pasadena, Altadena, La Cresenta and La Canada. All are dancers with Contemporary California Ballet and their Youth Company, directed by Erin Holt.

The charming winter-time tale of the “Snow Queen”, now in its eleventh season, “will begin to move in a whole new direction”, says Artistic Director and choreographer, Erin Holt. Ms. Holt’s new vision for the production promises newly choreographed scenes and exotic costuming for a greater experience of whimsy. The company will demonstrate new aerial effects in which “Creatures of the Forest” climb and dance aerial ballet on silk scarves. Additionally, the musical score, composed by Randall Michael Tobin is being completely re-orchestrated.

“Art forms remind us of our better selves and help us rise above a sometimes difficult environment.” Rebecca said. “I hope to see you at one of the performances.”
