Bond Brothers Standardizes on Vela Systems for Projects at Harvard University, Expands Usage to New Projects at MIT

Field Software from Vela Systems and Tablet PC Solution for Commissioning, Worklists, Punchlists and Document Delivery Accelerates Project Delivery and Reduces Risk for Bond Brothers.

Burlington, MA, January 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Field Software and Tablet PC Solution for Commissioning, Worklists, Punchlists and Document Delivery Accelerates Project Delivery and Reduces Risk, Vela Systems, a developer of mobile field software for the AECO (architecture, engineering, contractor and owner) industry, today announced that Bond Brothers is expanding its usage of Vela Software for construction projects at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After multiple successful deployments at Harvard, Contractor Bond Brothers then elected to implement Vela Systems at the new Media Lab project at MIT, a high visibility project for the Institute.

Since roughly 80 percent of all construction project dollars are spent “in the field,” technologies that automate field activities have a tremendous positive impact. Bond Brothers is using Vela Systems to drive a standard set of processes across the entire program to accelerate project delivery, reduce risk and follow green construction principles. Field process standardization eliminates the need to “reinvent the wheel” project-by-project with each new set of stakeholders. Standardization also gives contractors newfound visibility into the health of the overall construction portfolio across all projects and contractors. Lessons learned are ported from one project to the next in a collaborative knowledge management environment.

Vela Systems is the leading developer of mobile software that streamlines all field construction processes for the AECO industry. Vela Systems’ software, which has been used on more than 300 projects from Las Vegas to Dubai, replaces the field notebooks and tubes of drawings traditionally carried on construction sites with specialized software installed on Tablet PCs. Vela Systems puts entire file cabinets of documents that were formerly stored in trailers at the fingertips of people in the field. Those documents can then be used in Vela Systems’ modules to accomplish specific tasks such as materials tracking, field reports, punch lists, owner walkthroughs and safety inspections.

With the long-term outlook common to academic and institutional owners, Harvard recognizes the importance of construction quality, because the institution must live with the results for decades to come. In the immediate term, Vela Systems reduces the communications delay between events happening in the field and notifications to all parties, so that the work can proceed quickly and so that senior management knows what is happening in near real-time. Harvard and Bond Brothers have committed to advancing green construction, and a large part of that involves the creation of a paperless jobsite. Vela Systems enables managers to give their people in the field immediate access to thousands of documents without printing a single sheet.

Kevin Cooke, Director of Operations at Bond Brothers, first deployed Vela Systems on the construction of a new eight-story, 480,000-square-foot laboratory space, four stories of which were below grade.

“Harvard wanted us to present them with a process that would allow both the design team and our construction management team to deliver a job of the highest quality with no uncompleted tasks,” Cooke said. “So I researched technologies that would allow us to streamline the delivery of that lab. Through the use of Vela Systems, the owners became very aware of what was going on at the field level. And when a subcontractor senior manager sees that his organization is responsible for 22 percent of the punch list, he’s going to make sure something is done about it.”

“Owners like Harvard University and construction firms like Bond Brothers are recognizing the value of field software for construction and mandating its use on multiple projects. By standardizing on Vela Systems, they accelerate project delivery, get better visibility into work progress, all while promoting green construction principles,” said Tim Curran, Vela Systems’ CEO. “Our solution gives the field the information they need to do their job more effectively, and it removes unnecessary delays in communication from what’s happening ‘on the ground’ so the project moves faster.”
