)-- The people of Kelly & Associates Insurance Group (KELLY) are banding together to support the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry, by hosting a bone marrow registration drive for employees at the company’s Hunt Valley headquarters on January 23rd, 2009.
The marrow registry drive and a concurrent blood drive are being held in honor of a colleague who is battling leukemia. Enlisting volunteers for the National Marrow Registry increase the chances of finding a life-saving match for their friend, as well as for the thousands of patients nationwide awaiting this life-saving treatment.
“We are deeply concerned for our colleague, and are willing to do anything it takes to help with his treatment,” said David Kelly President of KTBSPayroll, a Division of Kelly & Associates Financial Services, Inc. and Executive Vice President of Kelly Benefit Strategies. “Through him we have become aware of the lifesaving potential of bone marrow donation. What has surprised me personally is how easy it is to register. I think that the more awareness we can raise about this issue, the more people will be encouraged to sign up.”
Mr. Kelly explained that registration in the directory is as simple as providing a cheek swab and answering a medical questionnaire. In the event that a match is found, additional steps will be taken to ensure the health and willingness of the potential donor. The marrow donation itself is typically an outpatient procedure with little or no side effects. The body renews any donated marrow within a matter of weeks, he noted.
“This is one of those opportunities where a regular person can potentially do something extraordinary to save another person’s life,” Mr. Kelly observed.
