DW. Dunphy – Enigmatic (Standard and Deluxe Editions) (Introverse Music) Arrives April 28, 2009

Dw. Dunphy's latest album arrives 04/09 in three formats.

Red Bank, NJ, January 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Following fast on the heels of 2008’s Modernism, Dw. Dunphy returns with Enigmatic, a recording he calls his most personal release so far. “The whole thing has an underlying theme, mostly about how even the stories we tell and the masks we wear say a lot of truth about who we are. I delved into that a little on Pseudobiography but for the first time, I’m stepping out of my comfort zone to say, this is me, more than I have in the past.” Enigmatic also revisits the stylistic clashing Dunphy experimented with on Modernism. “Modernism was split almost down the middle between songs and instrumentals and I enjoyed the process of bringing the two together in some kind of balanced way. Enigmatic is much more song-driven. It is perhaps the most song-based album I’ve ever done. The fun part was that I had a lot of simple, acoustic-based songs, very much the kind of songs I did early on, interspersed with more rock, more aggressive songs. This is a recording meant to be played loud and softly, depending on which track is up.”

On using guitars and keyboards in equal measure, Dunphy readily admits his influences. “A child of the 1980s, I guess. It was a really interesting time in music when keys and guitar were sharing equal time. You had the ‘80s synth rock, the new-wave groups, even hard rock bands like Rush adding a lot of texture to what they were doing with synthesizers. Now in 2009, you hear these sounds again and it is like a reverse-dating. Yeah, it sounds like 1985 again, but new acts are doing that on purpose. If you live long enough, I suppose, you’ll end up fashionable several times over.”

Enigmatic will arrive in three versions: a physical standard version, a digital download version and a deluxe edition. “That was a lot of fun for me. I’m a geek about that stuff – I guess that’s also a part of being an ‘80s kid. That was the last dominant decade for the vinyl LP and you came to appreciate all that had to offer. The big graphics, lyrics, liner notes, the sheer inclusiveness of it all. So by packaging Enigmatic in this 32-page book, I got to really fulfill what this album is: it’s an art project. It’s the full lyrics, notes, pictures and it is in color.” The deluxe version also features two tracks not available on the standard edition. “You need to make it worth the purchaser’s while. These two songs definitely were meant to be part of the project, but tonally they were weighing the project more to the acoustic side and I felt it threw off the balance. As extras for the deluxe version, it makes sense – this is the all-inclusive edition, as it were.”
