Lux Art Institute Welcomes Victoria Adams as Next Artist-in-Residence

San Diego, CA, January 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Lux Art Institute, San Diego’s recent recipient of the American Institute of Architects San Diego Chapter top design award, will welcome Victoria Adams as the next resident artist of ‘09.

Adams is a landscape painter who lives and works on Vashon Island off the coast of Seattle, Washington. Her residence at Lux will be from March 26 – April 4, during which she will create a 50” x 50” oil painting based on the San Elijo Lagoon, neighbor to Lux, and one of Southern California’s last remaining wetlands. She will observe the lagoon and its unique environment for the piece she will create on-site.

Visitors can “see art happen” while Adams is in the Lux studio and view her completed work through May 20.

While Adams finds inspiration for her primary subject matter in the panoramas of sky, land, water, clouds, and weather in the Pacific Northwest, her imagery transcends region. Her work is inspired by a combination of fragments of photographed scenes, daydreams, and memories of paintings and places—all filtered through the influence of the historical landscape tradition.

Adams’ work has been widely exhibited at galleries nationally and is included in the permanent collections at the Tacoma Art Museum in WA, the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, WA, and in numerous private and corporate collections. Her paintings will be the subject of a mid-career retrospective at the Tacoma Art Museum in 2010.

“We are thrilled to welcome Victoria to Lux this spring,” said Lux Director Reesey Shaw. “Her luminous paintings refer to landscapes that, tragically, no longer remain, but reaffirm our need to connect to nature. Lux’s location on a wildlife preserve overlooking the San Elijo Lagoon will inspire her work here.”

Adams was born in Columbus, OH and received a BA in English Literature from Ohio State University. In her twenties, she moved to the Pacific Northwest, initiated her training in the visual arts and received a BFA in painting from the University of Washington, studying under renowned painter Jacob Lawrence.

Lux Art Institute is located at 1550 South El Camino Real in Encinitas. Lux hours are Thursday and Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; cost is $10 for two visits.

About Lux Art Institute
Lux Art Institute, located in Encinitas, Calif., opened its doors to the public in November 2007 and is redefining the museum experience with its unique artist-in-residence program. At Lux, artists live and work on site, while producing a commissioned work of art.

Throughout the year, Lux invites significant regional, national, and international artists to participate in the Lux residency and encourages visitors from across the country to observe and engage them. This one-of-a-kind institution invites visitors to not only “see art,” but also to “see art happen.”

Slated to be the first “green” (LEED certified) art museum in California and located alongside one of Southern California’s few remaining coastal wetlands, Lux’s five-acre site overlooks the San Elijo Lagoon and is surrounded by a wildlife preserve that stretches to the Pacific Ocean. In an effort to meld the conservation and re-vegetation beyond the museum walls, an array of rare native plants blends seamlessly into the nearby preserve.

Santa Monica, California-based Renzo Zecchetto, AIA – whose other significant architectural projects include the award-winning Church of the Nativity in Fairbanks Ranch, Calif. and the Alusa Printing Company in Santiago, Chile – designed the two-story building to utilize energy-saving strategies such as the use of natural light and recycled materials which will preserve resources for future generations.
