Membrane Bioreactor Wastewater Treatment Solution Introduced by Bord Na Móna for Water Reuse and Total Nitrogen Applications

PuraM® System features Bord na Mona’s enhanced air scour flat plate cassette design, that reduces complexity, and operational input in a range of pre-engineered designs suitable for decentralized applications.

Greensboro, NC, February 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A significant advance in small flow wastewater treatment solutions was announced today by Bord na Móna Environmental Products U.S. Inc. with the WEFTEC 2008 Show market introduction of its PuraM® Membrane Bioreactor Pre-Engineered System.

Available in a range of mobile prefabricated carbon steel, or stainless steel tank configurations capable of treating flows from 7,000 to 125,000 gpd, or in concrete tanks for applications in excess of 1 MGD, the PuraM system features significant improvements over comparable systems for small flow applications using an enhanced air scour flat plate design.

“The PuraM Membrane Bioreactor system achieves high quality effluent that meets water reuse and stringent Total Nitrogen standards within a greatly reduced overall footprint,” according to Shane Keaney, President of Bord Na Móna Environmental Products U.S. Inc. “The pre-engineered solution is designed specifically for the decentralized municipal, community, and commercial markets that require greater reliability, reduced operational input, ease of maintenance, and less complexity than other systems.”

PuraM is based on flat plate ultra-filtration membrane technology assembled into stainless steel membrane cassettes. The cassette consists of a unique integral dedicated air diffuser assembly that eliminates the need for back-pulsing or frequent chemical cleaning. The system does not require permeate pumps or any site installed chemical dosing system while achieving a typical time between recovery cleans of approximately 12 months, significantly better than comparable systems.

Multiple reactors can be combined or custom designs provided to obtain flows up to and in excess of 1 MGD. Systems can be located above ground or in-ground with a range of screening and pumping packages. Add-on packages for phosphorous and/or enhanced nitrogen removal are available. Rent or lease systems can be provided.

The PuraM Process:
The PuraM system uses ultra-filtration membranes to separate activated sludge from treated effluent, eliminating the need for final clarification. The biological process removes constituents such as BOD, nitrogen and phosphorus, while the membranes, submerged in the biological reactor, provide a physical barrier that rejects pathogens and other suspended solids. The membrane also facilitates reduced reactor volumes at the higher mixed-liquor suspended solids values at which it operates, up to 12,000 mg/l. The nature of the activated sludge floc, combined with continuous air scouring by aeration bubbles created by a carefully designed aeration grid, ensures consistently high removal efficiency without membrane fouling.

Nitrification is facilitated by the long sludge age while denitrification can be incorporated as part of Bord na Mona’s MBR designs, with nitrogen effluent levels of 10 mg/l or 5 mg/l TN depending upon permit or client requirements.

Key Benefits of the PuraM design:
The primary benefits of the Bord na Mona PuraM Membrane Bioreactor wastewater treatment solution can be summarized as including:

• Fully-engineered, modular design enables phased construction
• Flat-plate membranes are particularly economical for small- to medium-size plants
• Reduced complexity, minimal peripheral equipment
- Gravity filtration design, no permeate pumps required
- No back-pulse cleaning and no routine chemical cleans required
• Inlet screening requirement: 3 mm screens
• Proven, robust and stable in many years of operation
• Proprietary technology, backed by extensive process capability
