Texas Legislators Learn About Complementary & Alternative Medicine

Members of the Texas legislature's health committees are receiving copies of a book from the Texas Health Freedom Coalition to learn about complementary and alternative medicine.

Plano, TX, February 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Members of the Texas House Public Health and Senate Health & Human Services Committees are receiving information relating to H.B. No. 40 from the Texas Health Freedom Coalition. Each legislator will be getting autographed copies of the award-winning book UnBreak Your Health -The Complete Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies (Loving Healing Press 2007). The book features 300+ listings in 138 different subjects in an easy-to-read style and is being provided as introduction to the field of complementary and alternative medicine.

"The visibility and importance of natural and alternative health care as a component of Texas' health care system continues to increase. It is therefore critical that key state decision makers possess accurate, authoritative information on the vast array of natural and alternative health modalities in order to make wise decisions on their employment. UnBreak Your Health is endorsed by the Texas Health Freedom Coalition as an exceptional natural and alternative health information resource. Every legislator should have a copy in their reference library" according to Peter McCarthy, Certified Traditional Naturopath and Chairman of the Texas Health Freedom Coalition.

HB 40 would offer consumer and provider protection at no cost to the State of Texas. The bill also provides increased access to alternative health therapies which will produce substantial health care savings. State officials admit licensing of the estimated 1,200 different types of CAM health services and products would be prohibitively expensive to administer so the bill strikes a balance between no supervision and too much restriction.

Alan Smith, the author of UnBreak Your Health, donated copies of his book to the Texas Health Freedom Coalition for this educational effort. A resident of Plano, Texas Mr. Smith said "I thought it was important for our legislators to learn more about complementary and alternative medicine since they'll be voting on our rights in this session. We need to offer good information to balance the scales against the special interests who want laws passed to give them a monopoly on our health."

The Texas Health Freedom Coalition consists of 16 health advocacy organizations, practitioners, grass roots groups and consumers. Currently the organization has 48,000 members across the state. The mission of the group is to preserve and protect health freedom of choice for Texans.
