Ciphent Lends Expertise to National Cybersecurity Discussion

Baltimore, MD, February 27, 2009 --(PR.com)-- CEO, James C. Foster Featured on Federal News Radio to Discuss the Merits and Pitfalls of President Obama’s Cyber Security Initiatives.

Peaking concern over the growing frequency and severity of international cyber attacks has driven the White House to push for a nationwide “health check” of the U.S. cyber security infrastructure. President Obama has mandated a total infrastructure review to assess the state of government agencies and the public sector to aid in developing an integrated strategy on tackling cyber security issues.

Ciphent, a rapidly growing cyber security firm located 20 miles outside of Washington, D.C. has recently risen to the forefront, leading the charge against international cyber threats and attacks on the U.S. Government and critical infrastructure. Recognizing Ciphent’s commitment to U.S cyber security and their growing prominence as thought leaders in the industry, CEO James C. Foster was invited on Federal News Radio 1500AM by the hosts of “The Daily Debrief”, Amy Morris and Chris Dorobek. Mr. Foster was asked to give his perspective, the “hacker’s point of view” on the Obama initiatives and the current state of the US cyber infrastructure.

During the Interview, Mr. Foster noted that “There are significant challenges ahead” but that the government has taken good first steps, one example being the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative a classified program. One of the core issues plaguing the United States that Mr. Foster pointed out during the broadcast is that “security is not being built into the design and framework of new technology”. With an ever increasing reliance on technology throughout our daily lives, the threats we face as a nation from cyber warfare are beginning to hit very close to home. The increasing use of interconnected technology to run our power grid, manage our water treatment facilities and command the air traffic control system are all becoming more vulnerable to new forms of international cyber warfare. Unless security becomes forethought and not an afterthought, Mr. Foster warns that we face some serious risks ahead.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Security has advanced incredibly in the past few years and there are now very effective tools and technologies that can lock down a computer network and safeguard classified information. However, Mr. Foster reminds us that “The idea of guaranteed security is not practical.” The threat to our nation is real and security is unfortunately still lagging behind. “Organizations should have a comprehensive and effective risk management practice that allows them to use their budget to remove and mitigate risk and liability.” It is impossible to completely eliminate the threat to our national infrastructure from cyber terrorists. With the right preventative and proactive methods however, we can do exactly as Mr. Foster recommends and mitigate the majority of the risk.
