New Daily Persistent Headache is Special Focus of Neurologist at Michigan Head•Pain & Neurological Institute

Neurologist and headache specialist will focus on distinctive and disabling condition.

Ann Arbor, MI, February 27, 2009 --(PR.com)-- One of the most challenging head pain conditions is a special focus of a recently recruited neurologist and headache specialist at the Michigan Head•Pain & Neurological Institute (MHNI) in Ann Arbor, Mich. Before joining MHNI, Dr. Henry Hooker was the founder and director of The Headache Center at East Tennessee Medical Group in Alkoa, Tenn. The announcement was made by Dr. Joel Saper, founder of MHNI and Medical Director of the Head•Pain Treatment Unit at Chelsea Community Hospital.

“New Daily Persistent Headache is a distinctive and disabling condition that requires an intense and focused approach,” said Dr. Saper. “We’re pleased to have someone of the caliber and experience of Dr. Hooker join the MHNI team.”

New Daily Persistent Headache is unique in that the headache occurs daily from onset, typically in a patient with no prior history. It can continue for years without any sign of alleviation despite aggressive treatment. Various causes are suspected, including viral, metabolic, and neurotransmitter (brain chemical) disturbances.

“The Michigan Head•Pain & Neurological Institute has an outstanding reputation as one of the pioneering centers for head pain treatment and research in the world,” said Dr. Hooker. “Dr. Saper is one of the first medical professionals to recognize chronic head pain as a primary neurological condition and to introduce aggressive treatment for every patient who seeks the Institute’s help. I am pleased to be part of this outstanding and renowned team of experts.”

Dr. Hooker has dual specialty certification. He is certified in both neurology and headache medicine. Prior to founding The Headache Center at East Tennessee Medical Group in 1999, he was founder and director of The Comprehensive Headache Center at the Clinics of North Texas in Wichita Falls, Texas from 1996-1999. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed his residency at Pennsylvania Hospital/The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was voted “Best of Knoxville” in a poll of physicians in Knoxville Magazine, and has been featured in several publications. He is a member of the International Headache Society, American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Joel Saper founded the Michigan Head•Pain & Neurological Institute over 30 years ago. MHNI is considered one of the premier centers for head and neck pain management providing comprehensive, aggressive care to patients from around the world who suffer from headache and related painful disorders. MHNI partners with Chelsea Community Hospital (CCH) for specialized hospital-based treatment. Dr. Saper and CCH developed the head pain treatment unit at CCH in 1978, forming the first hospital specialty program of its kind in the world.
