Miami Beach, FL, March 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The city of Miami Beach will host the 82nd annual Bacardi Cup Star Class Regatta from March 8th to March 13th. This prestigious regatta attracts thousands of sailing enthusiasts from around the world as they watch some of the world’s finest sailors compete for the honor and pride that comes with winning this legendary cup.

The competition will begin at noon on Sunday, March 8th on Biscayne Bay. Sailors from around the world will gather to embody the spirit of class and sportsmanship that comes with this event which began in Havana, Cuba. The Bacardi Cup is one of the few regattas in which world class sailors can compete against weekend yachters and other dilettantes.

Each year, 200 sailors from over 23 countries convene in South Florida and vie for this prestigious cup. The two member race teams, comprising of a skipper and a crew, board a 22 foot Olympic class Star sloops to test their mental fortitude and athletic abilities in order to pursue the ultimate prize: The Trofeo Bacardi. The “Tito” Cup, named after the grandson of the founder of Bacardi Rum, is awarded to the winning to crew.

Last year’s winner was the Portuguese team, Afonso Domingos and Bernardo Santos. The duo also won the cup in 2004 and remains the only European team to ever win this competitive star class event.

The Bacardi Cup is the only Cuban-born competition to continue in the United States. The regatta is co-hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club and the U.S. Sailing Center. Both institutions are based in Coconut Grove.

The event will kickoff with a Sunday Welcome Party which will feature a Bacardi Rum tasting. The Mid-Week Awards will be held on Wednesday at CRYC and the Bacardi Cup will be presented at the awards ceremony after the last race on Friday topped with a Cuban "Asado Tropical" Buffet.
