Dallas/Fort Worth, TX, July 14, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Local driving sensation Michael Johnson’s pursuit of representing the United States in Formula 1 Racing is taking another step forward.

The five time Karting national champion kicked off a successful sponsorship drive at the Texas Driving Experience. TDE hosted a promotional reception for Johnson, who is a race driving instructor with TDE. The reception focused on helping Johnson acquire sponsors to race in the highly competitive New Zealand Toyota Championship Series.

The New Zealand series is a hotbed for budding new talent. Recent ‘graduates’ of this highly competitive series include AJ Allmendinger (Champ Car, Forsythe Racing) and Scott Dixon (Indy Racing League, Target Chip Ganassi Racing).

The New Zealand Toyota series championship is decided over the course of eight race weekends. A “round” in this series consists of three races for each of the eight weekends. The series is raced on an opposing calendar to the North American and European series, taking advantage of summer falling in the southern hemisphere when our tracks are dormant for the winter. Drivers compete in similarly constructed Toyota powered formula car chassis, placing the emphasis on driving rather than technology.

The history of racers making their way to Formula 1 via the New Zealand series is extensive. From Denny Hulme, 1967 World Champion, to current racing team McLaren-Mercedes Formula 1, who bears the name of Kiwi Bruce McLaren, the series has served as a launching point for many drivers’ careers.

“Michael is definitely a quadruple threat in Motorsports. He has the heart, the look, the ability to effectively showcase sponsors, and most importantly, the talent to succeed at the highest level,” says Dawn Stokes, Fort Worth Business Press “Woman of Influence” and owner of Texas Driving Experience.

Michael is not the first Texan to travel to New Zealand. During the illustrious career of Texas motorsports legend Carroll Shelby traveled to New Zealand to compete in the Tasman Cup. From there he would compete in Formula 1 and win in the 24 hour of Le Mans.
