Mallet Japan to Launch Its First Auction Specialized in Ukiyo-e, the Floating World Wood Block Prints

Tokyo, Japan, March 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Mallet Japan will hold a sale consisting of 2 sessions, Session I: Ukiyo-e Prints and Session II: Modern & Contemporary Art, on Friday, April, 24th in Tokyo, Japan.

The session I: Ukiyo-e Prints offers a carefully selected collection of 92 wood block prints mainly from the late 18th to 19th centuries (Edo and Meiji Periods) by representing Ukiyo-e artists such as Harunobu SUZUKI, Utamaro KITAGAWA, Katsushika HOKUSAI, Hiroshige ANDO and many others.

The Ukiyo-e prints flourished in the Edo period which lasted from 1603 to 1868 among the newly liberated townsmen, which were later introduced to Europe and became a major source of inspiration for Impressionists and Post-Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh and many others.

Mallet Japan is proud to offer the nation's cultural treasures to the global art market where the notion of Superflat has also gained international recognition in the past years which gives a new light to the woodblock prints full of Japanese aesthetics.

The collection offers a wide range of popular subjects such as daily activities of geisha or courtesans, portrait of popular Kabuki actors, scenic views depicting beautiful Japanese landscape as well as sexually explicit Shunga.

The highlights include "The Yahagi Bridge at Okazaki on the Tokaido Road", from the series "Shokoku meikyo kiran" (lot 24; est. 800,000 - 1,000,000 JPY ) and "The Fukui Bridge at Echizen", from the series "Shokoku meikyo kiran" (lot 25; est. 800,000 - 1,000,000 JPY) by Hokusai KATSUSHIKA and famous "Kambara" (lot 43; est 1,000,000 - 1,200,000 JPY) and "Driving Rain at Shono", both from the series "Tokaido gojusan tsugi" (lot 44; est. 1,200,000 - 1,400,000 JPY) by Hiroshige UTAGAWA.

The session II: Modern & Contemporary Art offeres a variety of items such as beautifully rendered painting by Yasuo Kuniyoshi "A Blond" (lot 225; est 5,000,000 - 7,000,000 JPY) and impressive work by Toshimitsu Imai "Victoir(Brise Glacee)" (lot 252; est. 3,000,000 - 4,000,000 JPY) as well as etchings by Tusguharu Foujita "Femme endormie" (lot 155; est. 1,000,000 - 1,300,000 JPY) and "Fillet au chat" (lot 156; est. 1,800,000 - 2,300,000 JPY).

The highlights from the non Japanese artist section include paintings by such artists as Maurice de Vlaminck "La Ferme sous l'Orage" (lot 380; est. 6,000,000 - 8,000,000 JPY), Bernard Buffet "Zinnias et Tulips" (lot 369), "Cyclamens dans un pot" (lot 375; est. 5,000,000 - 6,000,000 JPY each), Antoni Clave "Sans Titre" (lot 376; est. 3,000,000 - 4,000,000 JPY), Roberto Matta "Sans Titre" (lot 381; est. 1,000,000 - 1,500,000 JPY) and bronze piece by Gunther Gerzso (lot 298; est. 1,000,000 - 1,500,000 JPY).

The sale also features platinum print by Robert Mapplethorpe "Watermelon with Knife" (MPA #P1556) (lot 343; est. 2,500,000 - 3,500,000 JPY), linocut "Tete de Faune" (Bloch 1094) (lot 314; est. 1,000,000 - 1,500,000 JPY) and etching "L'Homme au Chien" (Bloch 28) (lot 315; est. 1,700,000 - 2,000,000 JPY) by Pablo Picasso, lithograph by Wassily Kandinsky "Kleine welten II" (Roethel 165) (lot 293; est. 1,200,000 - 1,600,000 JPY) and the complete set of 58 aquatints by Georges Rouault "Miserere" (Chapon & Rouault 54-111) (lot 288; est. 4,500,000 - 5,500,000 JPY).
