New York, NY, July 20, 2006 --(PR.com
)-- V.I.E.W. Video, a leading home video label and producer of jazz, performing arts, and pop music programs, announced the July 2006 DVD release of Airto & Flora Purim: The Latin Jazz All-Stars, from their critically acclaimed live concert at the Queen Mary Jazz Festival.
When the sizzling sounds of Brazil entered the mainstream of American jazz and rock in the sixties, Airto Moreira, the world’s foremost percussionist, was the leader. Performing with his wife Flora Purim, oneof the most innovative voices in modern jazz, they quickly forged a trail leading to the expansion and influence of Brazilian music on every culture around the world.
Airto, a brilliantly original percussionist, composer, and arranger, is also responsible for the resurgence of percussion in jazz and pop music worldwide. Beginning his musical career at the age of 16 playing trap drums in the local clubs of Sao Paolo, Airto went on to join the Quartelo Novo, which included the legendary Hermeto Pascoal. The group set the standard for a new progressive sound in Brazillian music… the mixing of fiery, passionate rhythms with soft chord changes. Since Airto’s relocation to the U.S. he has collaborated with such musical icons as Miles Davis, and Cannonball Adderly, to ground breaking groups Weather Report & Chick Corea’s ‘Return To Forever’ band, to Pop & Rock idols Paul Simon & Smashing Pumpkins.
Flora Purim’s critically acclaimed six-octave range has allowed her ample opportunity to explore her unique talent, making her the first singer to couple her pure sound with the hybrid singing style of Jazz-Latin-Rock fusion. Raised in Rio with the stylized rhythms of Brazilian street music, she became known while singing the then avant garde sounds of Bossa Nova. In the 60’s Flora moved to the U.S. with her husband, Airto, and quickly began to re-immerse herself in the music she loved, leading her to unprecedented growth as a vocalist. Flora went on to garner two Grammy nominations for ‘Best Female Jazz Performance’, and to collaborate with numerous artists including Chick Corea, George Duke, Duke Pearson, Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Evans and Carlos Santana.
In this live concert performance, recorded at the Queen Mary Jazz festival, Airto & Flora are captured at the height of their creative genius with their critically acclaimed band. With an all-star line-up that includes Joe Farrell on Saxophone, Kei Akagi on Keyboards, Roland Gingras on Trombone/Trumpet, and Tony Moreno on Drums, the latin jazz grooves and brazilian rhythms will make your head bounce, your toes tap, and the rest of your body groove to the infectious rhythms of the music. As an additional highlight, the Brazilian dance troupe ‘The Batucaje Dancers’, provides an entertaining and enlightening performance on Capoeira, while Flora Purim reminds us in a subtle and distinct voice why she is considered the Queen of Brazilian music.
