Sabotaged?

More people perished during the explosion of the Sultana, an 1865 Mississippi Riverboat than on the Titanic, but swallowed by history, controversy still exists if it was an accident or sabotage.

Big Lake, MN, April 06, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Romance Novelist, Lauri Robinson’s latest book, An April to Remember takes the readers aboard the Sultana’s final trip. “While on vacation in Memphis, a riverboat tour guide gave a chilling account of the Sultana’s final hours. I was very intrigued and knew I had to create a story around the event,” states Robinson.

The book was released in e-book format from The Wild Rose Press (www.thewildrosepress.com) on April 3rd, and the print is available at Amazon.

The Sultana was built to carry less than 400 passengers, but on that fateful night in April 1865 the boat had more than 2,000 men, women, and children crowding her decks, mainly newly released prisoners from two of the worst Confederate prison camps. The tragedy was lost amongst other national events happening at the time, the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. A few miles north of Memphis, deep in the middle of the night, the ship exploded, raining steam and fire upon the stacked decks. Hundreds died immediately, scalded to death, others were swallowed up by the raging spring waters of the four mile wide river, and others still, died in the days following, already too weak and emancipated to survive the disaster.

Thrown together into the mighty Mississippi, April Simonson and Jerek Brinkley survive the cold, rushing water and upon arriving in Memphis, realize her brother and niece are missing. Searching the dead and dying, they vow to find the boat burners responsible for the explosion. However, an army’s investigation focuses on who received financial gain from the over-crowded ship, and the arrival of Alan Pinkerton to investigate the accident throws another theory into the mix.

An April to Remember, ISBN-10: 1601544561 ISBN-13: 978-1601544568 back blurb:
April Simonson hated men—all men. They were cruel, sinful beasts. Her disfigured face was proof. That is until she met Jerek Brinkley. Then, as the revered Sultana explodes, April falls into the dark, muddy waters of the Mississippi River terrified she’ll never see the light of day or the handsome riverboat gambler again.

Jerek Brinkley fought hell and high water to save the northern vixen who’d won his heart with her card tricks, only to fear Allan Pinkerton’s arrival in Memphis might reveal secrets he’s not ready for her to know.

Based on history’s greatest maritime disaster, An April to Remember, sprinkled with real facts and events, revives the Sultana, a Civil War riverboat whose death toll surpassed the Titanic’s, and offers a new twist on what might have happened that fateful night in 1865.

“This is a great story! A must read for anyone who loves history and romance,” says author Paty Jager.
