Messer Construction Co. Named One of Nation’s Safest Construction Companies

Messer Construction Co. has been named one of the nation’s top companies in construction safety by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America, receiving first place in the AGC’s national 2009 Construction Safety Excellence Awards.

Cincinnati, OH, April 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Messer Construction Co. was recently named one of the nation’s top companies in construction safety by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America. Messer was awarded first place in the National AGC’s 2009 Construction Safety Excellence Awards based on the creation, implementation and results of the “Safety4Site” commitment.

Safety4Site is designed to reach from the jobsite to the board room to meet and exceed safety expectations and standards on all Messer projects. Safety4Site combined everyday elements like mandatory eye protection and daily huddle meetings with a non-negotiable emphasis on addressing OSHA’s most common hazards. Under the leadership of Messer employees, results have been outstanding with significant reductions in the costs of accidents as well as Messer’s incident rate.

“There’s no better measure of the strength of a company than its ability to keep its workers safe and healthy,” said Doug Pruitt, incoming president of AGC. “Safety is much more than a series of requirements; it is a way of operating that drives every decision on every project, every time.”

“Safety4Site dramatically illustrates Messer’s ability to inspire and foster leadership, influence and accountability that can transform our company – and our industry,” said Tom Keckeis, president of Messer. “Safety4Site has transcended typical safety programs and has become ingrained in our corporate culture.”

The 2009 Construction Safety and Excellence Awards were announced during the AGC’s 90th annual convention on March 6, in San Diego, Calif. The awards are designed to recognize companies who have developed and implemented excellent safety and loss prevention programs through management commitment, employee involvement, and program innovation. Hundreds of construction companies from across the country submit entries each year to showcase their programs alongside their peers. Comprehensive written entries require safety statistics, program timelines and implementation results as well as examples of employee engagement.

Earlier this year, Messer received AGC’s statewide award for Ohio, which qualified Safety4Site for national consideration. National finalists were invited to make presentations to a panel of distinguished construction safety professionals during the AGC annual convention, where the winners were announced.

“We are especially proud of this award because it reflects the cooperation and commitment of employees in every part of our company,” added Keckeis. “To be recognized on a national level demonstrates both the impact of the program and the quality of our people.”
