Sgt. Mark Ecker is one of the many service personnel whose combat-sustained injuries have left the idea of living in a traditional single-family home problematic. After suffering severe shrapnel wounds from an IED that was detonated inside a cinderblock wall, Sgt. Ecker lost both of his legs and will likely have ongoing rehabilitation needs.

Sgt. Michael Downing’s story is harrowingly similar. Now a double amputee, Downing’s convoy was hit by an IED in September of 2008. Still in Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Downing hopes to be able to play with his four children again soon, but the challenges his former home presents are insurmountable.
