Asbestos in Plain English

London, United Kingdom, May 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Asbestos management firm, Clifford Devlin, has published a simple guide to managing asbestos in the workplace. The 24-page A5 booklet outlines, in layman’s terms, who is responsible for managing the potentially hazardous substance in non-domestic premises and what those responsibilities are.

“Many people are unaware that asbestos may be present in buildings and who is tasked with managing the risks associated with it,” says Clifford Devlin’s Health & Safety Manager, Paul Clarke-Scholes, “Our easy-to-read guide explains everything that you need to know in less than 10 minutes.”

If a workplace premises was built before 2000 it may well contain asbestos. Since 1999 it has been illegal to use asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in construction or refurbishment. However asbestos was used extensively as a building material in Great Britain from the 1950s through to the mid-1980s and much of it is still in place.

According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) asbestos is the greatest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK and currently accounts for over 3000 workplace-related fatalities each year.

Clifford Devlin’s fully illustrated publication describes where asbestos is commonly found and how to identify it. It explains the legal framework, recent case studies and contains a step-by-step guide to dutyholders of what to do if asbestos is found on their premises.

The A5 booklet can be obtained in printed form, downloaded as a pdf from Clifford Devlin’s website (www.clifford-devlin.co.uk) or viewed online as an ebook at www.clifford-devlin.co.uk/asbestos.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous substance which has resistant properties and was widely used in building materials and other applications before its use was eventually banned. Inhalation of its fibres can cause Mesothelioma, lung cancer, fibrosis and is implicated in other potentially fatal cancers.

Clifford Devlin has provided asbestos management services for over 25 years. The firm can arrange for surveys to be carried out to identify the presence of asbestos containing material. The company is licensed by the HSE to remove and dispose of asbestos and is a corporate member of the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association.
