Beacon Street Capital Named “Bull & Bear Master” and “Top Gun” for Its Performance in 1Q2009

Atlanta investment management firm gains top ranking of equity money managers in the nation for the second consecutive quarter.

Atlanta, GA, May 28, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Atlanta based firm, Beacon Street Capital, LLC, has been rated Top Gun by Informa’s PSN for its DowJones/Select and S&P500/Select equity products for the 1-year, 3-year and 5-year periods ending March 31, 2009. The DowJones/Select was also rated Bull & Bear Master for the latest 3-year period.

“A Bull & Bear Master rating requires you to capture more of the market’s upside return and less of the market’s downside return over a 3-year period. Our products are designed for investors with a 3-5 year time horizon, so we’re quite pleased with that designation,” said Terry Burke, CEO of Beacon Street and co-portfolio manager for the two strategies.

It is the goal of active management to add value by choosing stocks that outperform the broader index with less volatility than the index. Yet, active management is a zero-sum game. Those who earn alpha do so at the expense of other investors who are subject to behavioral biases or less sophisticated analytics or processing skills.

Consequently, while the equity market may be inefficient, it is difficult for most managers to generate alpha (risk-adjusted excess returns) on a consistent and repeatable basis without a competitive edge. “We use a hybrid form of equity management to exploit market inefficiencies, one that combines fundamental judgment with a quantitative buy/sell model. The model is unique in that it is based on balance sheet changes that reflect a company’s internal growth potential,” said Mr. Burke, “and requires no leverage to generate alpha.”

Beacon Street Capital was recognized as Top Gun for its performance last quarter as well, and has routinely been awarded top spots by Money Manager Review and Morningstar.
