Suffolk Construction Uses Vela Systems for $106 Million School Campus Project in Los Angeles

Owner, Los Angeles Unified School District, values transparency and reduced risk through mobile field software integrated with Oracle’s Primavera Contract Management.

Burlington, MA, June 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Vela Systems, developer of mobile field software for the AECO industry, today announced that the California branch of Suffolk Construction, provider of preconstruction, construction management, design/build and general contracting services to education, commercial and government sectors, is leveraging several Vela Systems modules on a $106 Million education construction project for Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

The California-based operation of Suffolk Construction has been selected as the general contractor for a 272,000 square foot high school campus on 13.7 acres in Long Beach, California. Called South Region High School #4, it will have capacity for over 2,000 students. The campus is comprised of a four-story building housing 67 classrooms, a library, food services, and indoor and outdoor dining areas.

South Region High School #4 also includes subterranean parking for 168 vehicles, athletic fields, a jogging track, basketball courts and a stadium building in addition to a one-story maintenance and operations building. The project is expected to reach substantial completion in March of 2011.

“This project is one of many in our ongoing school construction program,” commented Ed Khachatourian, LAUSD. “One of several factors that attracted us to Suffolk Construction was their ability to provide, with technology like Vela Systems, immediate visibility into critical field changes and updates, quality control and more. A key benefit to us is that information flows directly from the field on the jobsite to Oracle’s Primavera Contract Management solution and the team. This gives us better information sooner and demonstrates Suffolk’s commitment to communication. Vela Systems field software gives us better visibility and accelerates job progress, while leveraging the capabilities of Oracle’s Primavera solutions.”

Suffolk Construction is using Vela’s Issues and Punchlists, Checklists (QA/QC) and Document Sync software in a staggered implementation approach. Vela Systems software will provide field personnel with access to plans and drawings on the jobsite allowing users to provide critical field updates to the owner, in this case LAUSD, and others regarding field changes, nonconformance and punchlists.

The expansion project also is leveraging Oracle’s Primavera Contract Management, a document management, job cost and field controls solution that keeps construction projects on schedule and on-budget through complete project control. Oracle's Primavera solutions help project-intensive businesses manage their entire project portfolio lifecycle.

“For us at Suffolk Construction, it’s our mission to build trusted relationships with our clients by approaching projects with passion, professionalism, hard work and integrity,” said Sam Laham, Vice President of Operations at Suffolk Construction. “Vela Systems software helps us fulfill our mission by better communicating our progress on the job to the owner and giving them visibility into our commitment to working hard to deliver the best possible project.“

“With Vela Systems, we're seeing our field personnel save 10 to 20% of time each week by removing the need to retype field notes and repeatedly head back to the trailer for documents,” Laham continued. “What's more, we're reducing rework by having a fast and accurate electronic QA/QC process. Because information goes directly to the subcontractors from the field, they can immediately begin work, which helps drive the project forward more quickly.”
