Purgatory Cellars/White Owl Winery Wins Gold in International Wine Competition for One-of-a-Kind Wine

Purgatory Cellars/White Owl Winery has won another gold medal with their one-of-a-kind Persimmon Solera. This sherry-style wine was entered in contests, starting in 2007. So far, it has won a silver medal in Vienna, Austria, the Illinois Governor's Cup for Best Dessert Wine in the State, a 90 point wine rating from the Beverage Tasting Institute, the P.E.A.K. Label of Excellence Award and numerous other gold and silver medals.

Birds, IL, June 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Purgatory Cellars/White Owl Winery, (whiteowlwinery.com) of Birds, Illinois has just been informed that their Persimmon Solera received a gold medal in the 6th Annual Critics Challenge International Wine Competition held May 23 and 24, 2009 at San Diego, California.

This sherry-type wine is crafted from wild harvested Midwestern persimmons and is the only commercially produced persimmon sherry in the world. The Persimmon Solera has a lush, ripe persimmon flavor, with hints of caramel and butterscotch, finishing on a chest-warming nutty note. It is available for sale throughout the Midwest.

The fifteen judges for the competition are renowned wine journalists from around the world, highly respected for their professional tasting skills and integrity.

Over 1,400 wine from around the globe were entered, with just over 600 wines winning medals. Winners will be published in the pages of the highly acclaimed Wine Review Online, magazine, including excerpts from the judges’ tasting notes.
