Laugh Along with Horror and Humor, Fear and Filth: "The Messiest Desk" by Marty Kelley

"The Messiest Desk" is the newest rhyming children's book from author and illustrator Marty Kelley. It tells the humorous story of a boy swallowed by his classroom desk and how the entire school community rallies to save him.

Madison, WI, June 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Ordinary author-illustrators would probably be well advised not to take on a children’s book project like "The Messiest Desk". The formula is an unusual one: light horror, gross humor, a jaunty rhyme scheme, and zany full-color drawings.

But Marty Kelley is no ordinary author-illustrator.

In his five previous books for Zino Press, Kelley has disparaged all four seasons ("Fall Is Not Easy", "Winter Woes", "Spring Goes Squish", and "Summer Stinks") and mocked all parental clichés in the world ("The Rules").

Now, with "The Messiest Desk", Kelley — a former kindergarten teacher based in New Hampshire — has turned his attention back to where he started: the classroom. In this book, a student named Benjamin is sucked into “the filthiest desk in the whole wide world” with its “eight hundred spelling lists / From weeks and months gone by / Twelve gooey wads of chewed-up gum / A cockroach, a spider, a fly”.

Teachers and staff all try to save Benjamin, but it appears all is lost…until fellow student Julie takes matters into her own hands, armed only with a plunger. Yeah, it’s not your typical rhyming picture book — but that’s the way Marty Kelley rolls.

"The Messiest Desk" retails for $15.95. Please contact Zino Press Children’s Books at 1-800-356-2303 for more information about the book, and MartyKelley.com to learn more about, well, Marty Kelley.
