India Art Summit™ 19th – 22nd August 2009 New Delhi

The 2nd Edition: Setting the Mood for the Indian Art Market.

East of Kailash, India, June 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- India Art Summit™ will take place for the 2nd year running this August in New Delhi. Following the landmark success of India Art Summit™ 2008, which attracted over 10,000 art enthusiasts from India and overseas and saw about 50% of the artworks sold, the art fair is being seen as a definitive factor in setting the mood for the art market this year. This year’s exhibition space has been expanded three-fold from 1500 sq m. to 4,500 sq m. at Pragati Maidan, ITPO. Support from the art community has been unprecedented with 54 leading galleries participating as compared to last year’s 34 galleries. From the 3 international galleries in 2008, there are now 17 galleries from around the world including some of the most prominent international galleries from Europe, Asia & the United States.

India Art Summit™ (http://www.indiaartsummit.com) comes at a time when there is an audible demand in the art market for an inclusive, international platform for Indian art. Besides being the single largest showcase of Indian art, the event will be the first major exposition of international art in the country. An important objective of India Art Summit™ is its focus on education and raising awareness about art. Part of this extended outreach is a specially convened International Speakers’ Forum, with over 45 influential Indian and international speakers.

The 2nd edition of India Art Summit™ (http://www.indiaartsummit.com) is supported by Sotheby’s and brings together a string of collaborations with organizations in support of the fine arts including Asia Art Archive, Asia Society, Lalit Kala Academy, The Devi Foundation, and The British Council.

Special Initiatives at India Art Summit 2009

1. International Speakers’ Forum

The International Speakers’ Forum will be held during India Art Summit™, from the 20th to the 22nd of August 2009. Its intent is to bring together artists, curators, scholars, museum directors, and art professionals to discuss pertinent issues that affect modern and contemporary art today and which will define its future. Although only a year old, the Speakers’ Forum at India Art Summit™ is already acknowledged internationally, as a highly reputed platform for discussion on contemporary art.

The programme will on the one hand focus on the academic research and current theories on globalization and its effects on art, and on the other, discussion between the various agents who are involved in the redefinition of the art market as we know it today. The symposium will serve as a platform for discussion on the rise of Asia - the influence of the Asian diaspora, the evolution of art in an emerging market, key players in the art market, new media and the changing face of contemporary art.

2. Sculpture Park

Located strategically at the entrance of the Indian Art Summit™ this year will be a 600 sq m. open air sculpture park, which will be open to all visitors. Large scale sculptures by a range of artists have been carefully selected, with the aim of creating a dialogue with the audience. The works displayed represent a diversity of individual styles, and each explores the interaction of art with the environment.

3. The Purple Wall Project

Special installations of the best of modern and contemporary art will be displayed in locations across the fair. Curated by Gayatri Sinha, this unique project aims to highlight the experimental use of materials, mediums, techniques and genres by Indian artists today.

4. Video Lounge

The purpose of the video lounge at India Art Summit™ is to acquaint art lovers with video art in its fullest form. The works being screened will showcase the growth of this medium, and its significance on the international art scene.

5. Satellite Events

During the week of the India Art Summit ™ 2009, reputed galleries around the city will play host to exclusive openings and exhibitions. Among them will be some of the foremost galleries, artists, and collectors in the city who will open their doors to visitors.
