Spanish Artist Cristina Guerrero & American Artist Michael Fitts to Have New Show in Chicago

Chicago's Gallery KH to highlight the work of new gallery artists Cristina Guerrero & Michael Fitts July 17 - September 8, 2009.

Chicago, IL, July 13, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Gallery KH is pleased to present the premiere exhibition by new gallery artists Cristina Guerrero & Michael Fitts. An opening night cocktail reception is scheduled for Friday, July 17, 5-8PM. This is the first exhibit at Gallery KH for both of the artists.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to showcase the new paintings of Cristina Guerrero and Michael Fitts at Gallery KH. Both artists are incredibly distinctive and innovative in their approach. These pieces are amusing, unique and truly engaging,” says Shannon K. Rather, Gallery KH Assistant Director. “Guerrero’s colorful, exciting and somewhat ‘shock factor’ tactic is a perfect match alongside Fitt’s more simple ‘pop culture’ references painted on scrap metals,” states Lissa Kivisto, Gallery KH Co-Director.

Michael Fitts began painting on scrap metal in 1992 and has not looked back. “What I found appealing from the onset was the sheer variety of surface tones and textures that I come across in my search for metal,” says Fitts. Of particular interest are scrap pieces that have markings or distressed pings or dents and scratches that were produced long ago. The subjects Fitts paints in oils are drawn from the most generic of popular cultural visuals, with an emphasis on objects that are used once, then discarded and quickly forgotten. He states, “The unexpectedness of elevating the importance of ephemeral objects to the status of art is what I find most interesting. From discovering a piece of interesting metal, to selecting the subject to be painted on its surface, the evolution of a piece provides many creative rewards and challenges of which I feel I've only begun to scratch the surface.”

Cristina Guerrero is exhibiting her tongue-in-cheek diptychs for the fist time in the United States at Gallery KH. A native of San Sebastian, Spain, Guerrero is known for her juxtaposition of everyday objects parlayed against her body. In 2002 she finished her studies in Fine Art at the Universidad del País Vasco in Bilbao, when she began to exhibit her work at different galleries of Spain. Similarities series, in which she compares two realities, the natural and the artificial one, the original and the copy, conceived within a fresh, clean and full of color point of view. There is a distance inherent to the ironic gaze towards the reflected image.
