Delaware River Valley Churches to Host Joint Summer Education Series

Presbyterian churches in Titusville, Stockton, Mt. Airy and Ringoes, New Jersey, to host Princeton Theological Seminary Professor of Old Testament Jeremy M. Hutton for community-wide series of lectures on Old Testament prophets and prophecies and their implications for modern life.

Titusville, NJ, July 21, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Presbyterian churches in Titusville, Mt. Airy, Stockton and Ringoes, New Jersey, have partnered to present a new series of summer lectures designed to offer church members and area residents an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Christian scripture and to study its applications in modern life. Jeremy M. Hutton, assistant professor of Old Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary, will present the inaugural series of lectures, which will focus on exploring Old Testament prophets and prophecies as they are presented in the books of 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings, on the first four Sundays in August at 5:30 p.m.

“Our four congregations are very excited to begin this partnership,” said The Rev. Ryan Balsan, pastor of the Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church in Ringoes. “By combining our resources, we hope to be able to provide substantive educational opportunities over a greater area than we would be able to by ourselves."

The four-week lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will rotate among the host churches. The Aug. 2 lecture will be hosted at the First Presbyterian Church of Titusville, located at 48 River Dr. in Titusville; the Aug. 9 lecture will be hosted by the Stockton Presbyterian Church, located at 22 S. Main St. in Stockton; the Aug. 16 lecture will be hosted by the Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church, located at 39 Mt. Airy Village Rd. in Lambertville; and the Aug. 23 lecture will be hosted by the Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church, located at 37 John Ringo Rd. in Ringoes. Each lecture will begin with light refreshments.

“The rotational nature of our new lecture series will allow each of our congregations, as well as each of our home communities, a chance to participate in what we think is an outstanding opportunity to learn more about the Christian faith, and to enjoy fellowship with our sister congregations in their respective church homes,” said The Rev. Kenneth Good, pastor of the Stockton Presbyterian Church.

Hutton’s lecture series, titled “The Prophetic Office in the books of the Former Prophets (Samuel-Kings),” will allow participants to study topics such as the balance of power between the Old Testament prophets and kings and how this dynamic is lived out in modern society, the significance of the prophets’ power and movement among Israel’s geography, the problem of sanctioned deception and murder in the prophets’ work and the nature of the modern church’s prophetic role in society and government. And, while the lectures will be delivered as a thematic series, each is designed to stand alone, in the case some participants’ schedules will only allow them to attend part of the series.

“We are blessed to be so near to Princeton Theological Seminary, and to be able to host someone of Dr. Hutton's caliber,” said The Rev. Merle Wilson, pastor of the Mt. Airy Church. “I am excited about bringing his program to so wide an audience, and equally as excited about the informal fellowship among the churches and everyone from the community who joins us for this free, but valuable, experience.”

Hutton, who earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University, has taught courses in biblical Hebrew, prophetic literature and exegesis of the minor prophets at Princeton Theological Seminary since 2005. His research interests include symbolic geography of Transjordan and the Jordan River in the Old and New Testaments, Israelite prophets and the institution of prophecy, anthropological and sociological approaches in biblical interpretation, and the formation and structure of the Deuteronomistic history, especially the books of Samuel. He is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA).

“Jeremy Hutton’s teaching style combines a deep knowledge of biblical theology and history with an approachable and accessible presentation,” said The Rev. Will Shurley, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Titusville. “When I was a student of his, he would make ancient texts come alive by drawing on popular culture references and current events to illuminate important, but difficult, concepts.”
