Ithaca, NY, July 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Brigadier General Richard Delafield, Chief of Engineers for the U.S. Army, submitted a report to Congress in 1865 that included this map, called “Defenses of Washington, Extract of Military Map of N.E. Virginia.” Despite its name, it includes parts of southern Maryland and street grids of the cities of Washington, D.C., Georgetown, Alexandria and Uniontown (now Anacostia). The map is especially interesting in that it includes all the forts surrounding the capital, from Ft. Stevens to the north, Ft. Foote to the south, Ft. Meigs to the east and Ft. Buffalo to the west. In all, dozens of forts and batteries are identified and located, as well as connecting roads, turnpikes, bridges and railroads. Topographical features such as hills, rivers and forests are also shown, along with outlying towns and farms, including the names of hundreds of property owners. This magnificent map documents a historically important point in time and a mindset concentrated on winning a divisive civil war. Size: 19 3/4" x 15 1/2". Price: $10.00.

Other maps and views in the collection of Historic Urban Plans, Inc. dating to the Civil War include J. H. Colton’s 1861 map of the eastern United States, prepared for the magazine the Rebellion Record and showing military stations, forts, railroads and Pony Express routes from Texas to Florida, Massachusetts to Dakota Territory. The 1864 views of Annapolis and Alexandria by Charles Magnus and Voltaire Combe’s 1864 view of New Bern, NC, are fine examples of mid-19th century lithography during a time of significant turmoil and transition for the southern states.

These facsimiles are available from Historic Urban Plans, Inc., an Ithaca, New York-based publisher of reproductions of antique maps, plans, birds-eye views and sea charts since 1964. U.S. cities and regions are well represented, as are other cities in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as world maps.
