Raleigh, NC, July 26, 2009 --(PR.com
)-- Nancy McFarlane, president of MedPro Rx, Inc. (www.medprorx.com), a provider of specialty pharmacy services to clients with chronic illnesses who need clotting factor, IVI g and other medication, has announced that the pharmacy has awarded 78 scholarships in 31 states totaling $72,000 this year for students living with bleeding disorders. Despite tough economic conditions, the pharmacy increased the number of scholarships by 11 and gave $12,000 more than 2008.
Since starting its “Education is Power” scholarship program in 2006, MedPro Rx has distributed $207,000 to students nationwide who have either hemophilia or von Willebrand Disease. The annual scholarships are open to United States residents who are living with a bleeding disorder, entering or attending a community college, junior college, four-year college, university or vocational school, and are actively contributing to their communities.
Hemophilia is a rare, hereditary disorder that causes excessive bleeding to occur spontaneously or after injury. The bleeding may be external or internal into joints, muscles, the abdominal cavity, the brain and other organs. Hemophilia affects approximately 20,000 people nationwide, crossing all racial and socioeconomic groups, with a higher incidence among males. The three most common types of hemophilia are Hemophilia A or Factor VIII Deficiency, Hemophilia B or Factor IX Deficiency, and von Willebrand Disease. vWD is caused by a deficiency or defect of a clotting protein, and it affects approximately 1-2 percent of the United States population. Unlike hemophilia, vWD occurs equally among males and females and is more likely to cause nosebleeds and bleeding under the skin than into the joints.

“We are honored to give aid to students living with bleeding disorders,” McFarlane said. “Students in the bleeding disorder community face financial burdens that other students do not, so to be able to aid in their education is a very special privilege that we have here at MedPro Rx.”
“We are pleased to be able to give out more scholarships and more scholarship money this year,” said Kathy Robinette-Stoneberg, scholarship coordinator for MedPro Rx. “Now more than ever, students are in need of financial help, and we are so touched by the gratitude and promise they have shown.”
