Benefit Auction Raises Funds for Local Artist

Granby, CT, July 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In every industry, a level of camaraderie develops. Colleagues rally together to celebrate birthdays, marriages and births. That amazing level of comradeship reaches new heights when a tragedy strikes. Free Lunch Studios in Granby CT was the setting for a heartwarming example of such camaraderie and compassion. On Sunday July 19, members of the comic book community across the northeast came together to celebrate the achievements of CT cartoonist Rusty Haller. Fans assembled to view a collection of work created by Rusty from various titles, including his continuing webcomic Ace and Queenie and his newest project Angry Man. And when the bidding started, the crowd favorites became evident.

The Rusty Haller Benefit Auction and Gallery Event came together through the efforts of Free Lunch Studios’ owners Matt C. Ryan, Steve Kanaras and Steve Kuster. The organizers, along with over a dozen sponsors drew in a crowd of over 50 fans who generously contributed to the cause. During the gallery portion of the event, fans purchased original Rusty Haller artwork, books and puzzles. Attendees also purchased raffle tickets by the arm’s length to win autographed comics and rare action figures and busts donated by members of the vast New England comic book community.

The last event of the afternoon was a live auction. Facilitated by fellow cartoonist, Matt C. Ryan, items for bid included a selection of artwork from Rusty’s personal collection as well as items donated, and in some cases, created for the event. The bidding was fast and furious. Items garnering the highest bids included an original piece from Rusty featuring King Kong and a donated piece featuring iconic comic book characters Batman, Poison Ivy, the Joker and Two-Face. Reflecting on the event, co-organizer and publisher of Free Lunch Comics Steve Kanaras stated, “I was very pleased to see the incredible outpouring of support and generosity from both Rusty's colleagues and the community at large.”

At the end of the day, the efforts of the event, its organizers, sponsors and attendees paid off. The group proudly raised a total of $1328, with donations still coming in. Fans unable to attend the event but would like to help Rusty get back on his feet can visit http://www.bryannabunny.com. In recognition of Rusty’s work developing the character of Bryanna Bunny past, present and future, fans and friends can send donations via paypal and all proceeds will go directly to Rusty.
