The Catholic University of America College Democrats Named Best Chapter in Nation

Washington, DC, July 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- On Sunday, July 26 at the 50th Annual College Democrats of America (CDA) National Convention in Washington D.C., the College Democrats at The Catholic University of America (CUA) were awarded the 2009 Chapter of the Year Award.

The award goes to the chapter in the country with the most outstanding service and activism to the Democratic Party.

Heather Brown, the National Membership Director of CDA, presented the award to the Catholic University College Democrats at the close of the convention and conveyed how remarkable it was that CUA was able to coordinate massive campaign trips in over four states during the 2008 Presidential election. Additionally, she emphasized that the committee charged with selecting this year’s “Chapter of the Year” was particularly impressed with Catholic University’s commitment to progressive, issue-based awareness, quality campus programming, new media development, and a desire to immerse as many of its members as possible in the city of Washington D.C. through either internships or special events.

Joe St. George, chairman of the Catholic University College Democrats during the 2008-2009 School Year, accepted the award on behalf of Catholic University. “This is a remarkable achievement and a remarkable honor for us, for the university as a whole, and for any College Democrats Chapter in the United States who day in and day out faces critical opposition for its very existence.” St. George went onto say that “Catholic University’s current College Democrats chapter stands on the shoulders of remarkable young Democrats who over the course of the last decade proved to the cynics that you can be a Catholic AND a Democrat. Additionally, we share this award with our friends in the DC Federation of College Democrats who make us and every other chapter in it a better organization”

Erin Kilroy, current chairwoman of the Catholic University College Democrats, released the following statement: “Winning this award is a major milestone for our chapter and for the entire CUA community. I am so proud of all of our members for their commitment to, hard work for, and love for our organization. They spent Saturday mornings campaigning in Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, and Georgia. They took breaks from homework to make phone calls, to attend events, and to advance progressive ideals on and off campus. This award was not achieved through an individual effort; rather it was the result of a group of students who came together to form a family and to further a cause that they believe in. This is their award.”

This is the first time Catholic University has won this award.
