London, United Kingdom, July 31, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Recession? What recession. Sofa Design, an Essex based bespoke furniture maker and retailer were delighted by the Quality of visitors and turnover at the Grand Designs Live exhibition at Excel London last week.

Their director Mike Hackworthy said, “he was amazed by the response from the exhibition “We targeted sales to hit £120,000 for the 10 day event, and at last count we were up to an incredible £286,000 and we are still taking sales and enquiries now. We were a little apprehensive bearing in mind the economy at the moment, but the event has given us a broader platform to show our truly unique furniture and perhaps we didn’t realise that there are not many places to buy quality Bespoke sofas and chairs.” According to a company representative, orders were taken for as little as £500 for a buttoned footstool to over £16,000 for corner units and sofas for 3 lounges of a customer’s newly built house. The average spend per customers at Grand Designs was £4625.

Most of the sales taken were taken around the M25 area, but 6 orders were also taken have taken from customers from Ireland and 3 from Scotland. The event resulted in a lot of additional enquiries, including an enquiry from a renowned hotel that required about 20 sofas and 60 chairs for a refit at their top London Hotel. Enquires were also received from Architects, specifiers, Interior Designers and independent House builders; all in all the show has surpassed all expectations.

A spokesperson from Grand Designs said: “The fifth successive Grand Designs Live, London show, defied the Recession recording the Best Attendance Ever. As the curtain falls on the fifth successive show, organisers announced that this year’s event has been the most successful ever, despite the industry’s current economic downturn, with visitor figures up 5% on last year’s show with 105,000 visitors, across the 10 day event. Grand Designs Live, London, the UK’s no 1 consumer home, interiors, build and architectural show, based on the channel 4 series hosted by Kevin McCloud, closed on Monday (4th May) with exhibitors and organisers hailing the show as a recession-proof success.“

The company representative report that they were, “So pleased with the event that we have signed up for next year’s Grand Designs Live show and have doubled the size of our stand, from what we had this year.”
