Adelphi University to Host Parenting and Trauma Expert Dr. Daniel Siegel

Garden City, NY, August 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Adelphi University’s School of Social Work and Institute for Parenting are pleased to jointly offer the seminar “Mindsight and Integration: The Heart of Parenting and the Core of Healing Trauma” on Thursday, October 15, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. Featured speaker Dr. Daniel Siegel, well-known author and researcher in the development of parent-child relationships and trauma, will be available for a book signing until 4:30 p.m. Those working in any human services fields are encouraged to attend this seminar.

This program is designed to equip participants with the ability to explore the core process of integration, within the nervous system and within relationships, and come to understand the deeper nature of the parent-child relationship. The program will also focus on trauma which can be viewed as overwhelming our capacity to cope or impairments to integration, yielding dysfunctions in self-regulation that result in chaotic and rigid pathways of thinking, feeling, and being. In this way, mindsight, the heart of parenting, is also the heart of healing in therapy, particularly after the experience of trauma. Learning about the nature of neural integration affords a powerful avenue to connect research and practice with the important respect for the subjective lives of adults and children alike.

Dr. Siegel is an associate professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he teaches at the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development. He is also the co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center, and director of the Mindsight Institute. Dr. Siegel has contributed to several books on parenting and relationships, including authoring his most recent work, The Mindful Brain: Reflection and Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being (2007), which explores the links between mindfulness and the brain. He has also written The Developing Mind: Toward a Neurobiology of Interpersonal Experience (1999), edited the Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology, and co-authored Parenting from the Inside Out: How a Deeper Self Understanding can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive (2003). All of these books will be available for purchase during the seminar.
