The Smile on My Forehead: Author Publishes Memoir About Her Life with a Brain Injury

Salt Lake City, UT, September 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Fifteen years ago she was not expected to live. A car accident, while driving to college at Brigham Young University, left Jennifer Mosher comatose on impact with three broken toes, a fractured neck, and a severe Traumatic Brain Injury. Broken bones heal completely; a brain injury does not. Today, she’s published an engaging memoir that details her personal fears and frustrations of learning to accept the realities of living with this hidden disability.

After several months in the hospital, Jennifer healed enough to return to college at BYU, travel alone to Europe, teach English in Asia, work full-time, and even attempt graduate school. Life was back to normal, or so she thought. But, her daily activities were complicated by disorientation, memory loss, balance and coordination problems, a difficulty staying focused, and a sleep disorder—typical repercussions of a brain injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury is all too common today. Every 23 seconds, one person in the U.S. sustains a brain injury, and it currently leaves 5.3 million Americans with Disabilities. According to a study conducted by The National Foundation for the Brain, the cost of brain injury in the United States was $48.3 billion in 1992. This estimate is much higher today because of the war in Iraq. In fact, 30% of all combat-related injuries seen at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 2003 to 2005 included a brain injury.

Jennifer Mosher’s memoir is so relevant and candid that readers are captivated by her story. Steve Lee of Burlington, Kentucky says, "I couldn't keep from shedding a few tears as it gave me a chance to relive a little of what she and her family went through. I was fascinated by the great description of how her reformatted brain works. I think anyone would find the story intriguing, dramatic, and quite emotional." It’s been called a “real feel good book that’s very hard to put down.”
