Liberty For Maine Urges "No" Vote on Question One; Supports Full Marriage Equality

Portland, ME, September 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Liberty For Maine, a statewide freedom and liberty advocacy group, announced today its strong opposition to Ballot Question One, and urged all Maine residents who love liberty to oppose the measure.

James Oaksun, a Saco businessman and state chair of Liberty For Maine, stated that: “It is rare when we have such a clear choice to make regarding expansion of freedom and liberty for citizens of Maine. Ballot Question One calls on us to make that choice.

“Extending marriage equality to gay and lesbian Mainers,” Oaksun continued, “is one of the significant developments in the cause of liberty in a generation. Liberty For Maine stood proudly in support of the marriage equality bill in April, and we are still in support of it as a new law.”

Oaksun noted that there are others in Maine who do not share his view. “The backers of this referendum that would overturn marriage equality are afraid of freedom and liberty. They want to turn back the clock to a simpler, earlier time, when some were more equal than others. This is not the way to go.

“Freedom,” Oaksun said, “is always a new idea to some, although it is as old a concept as any. We should boldly and bravely move forward as a state, into the sunlight of freedom, equality and liberty. Now is the time.”

Liberty For Maine was founded in early 2009 to advance the interests of freedom and liberty in Maine in an active, creative and assertive manner, offer support to similar efforts underway in many other states and nationally, and engage in other activities as appropriate.
