Paul A. Winter's new book details his own turbulent life through seven recurring dreams. His book describes his own erratic upbringing and brings forth the awareness of teen male prostitution in South Africa.

This is Winter's own life-story, which spans nearly five decades, and describes the author's turbulent past--one he barely survived. The book traces Winter's erratic upbringing, from his sexual encounters before the age of five and to the physical and mental abuse his mother faced at the hands of his alcoholic father.
Winter also describes his own flirtation with death on two separate occasions, his venture into paying married men for sex, and many other wild escapades while searching for "the ultimate high."
This story is uniquely told through the framework of seven recurring dreams Winter had during certain periods in his life. They consist of a variety of subject matters--dark, slithering creatures wanting to tear and eat his flesh, the violation of a beautiful mermaid, and blood-thirsty black wolves in high pursuit to name a few. Taking the Freudian theory, Winter believes these dreams outlined all his fears and desires, which therefore allowed him to see his own true nature as a human being.
One message which seems to be clear in the memoir is how strong will and determination can lead anyone to prosper no matter their situation in life. Through his own resolve, Winter has managed to survive an early life of misery and turmoil to a life where he has now taught over fourteen thousand people mathematics and aerobics.
Aside from this message, The Lingering Scent also brings forth the awareness of teen male prostitution in the author's homeland of South Africa, where poor Afrikaner boys prostitute themselves daily in order to survive a most rigorous lifestyle. Winter, himself, has fostered four teenage boy prostitutes for protection and to better their lives. His act, many believe, emphasizes the reduction of child welfare in his home town.
