Tickets to a 'Timeless' Sarasota Opera Season Are Available Now

With great music, compelling stories, and dazzling productions, Sarasota Opera promises a 2009-10 season that is Timeless. Tickets are now available to the general public.

Sarasota, FL, September 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- With great music, compelling stories, and dazzling productions, Sarasota Opera promises a 2009-10 season that is Timeless. Tickets for all performances are now on sale at the Sarasota Opera Box Office and online at www.sarasotaopera.org. Ticket prices for opera performances start at just $19. Sarasota Opera will expand its fall season which was initiated last year, to include six performances of Verdi's beloved opera La traviata, running from October 30 to November 11. Lina Tetriani will star as Violetta Valery with Edgar Ernesto Ramirez as Alfredo Germont and Marco Nistico as Giorgio Germont. Martha Collins is the stage director. Sarasota Opera Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi will conduct. The Sarasota Orchestra will once again collaborate with the Sarasota Opera for these performances.

Sarasota Opera's Winter Opera Festival returns February 6 with four operas running through March 21.

The Winter Festival opens February 6 with the popular double bill of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci which will run through March 21. Cavalleria rusticana features Kara Shay Thomson, who received raves in last season's production of Tosca as Santuzza, with Gustavo López Manzitti as her unfaithful lover Turiddu, and Michael Corvino as Alfio. Mr. Manzitti will portray the betrayed clown Canio in Pagliacci with Aundi Marie Moore making her Sarasota Opera debut as his wife Nedda and Mr. Corvino playing Tonio. Sets were designed by David P. Gordon. Stephanie Sundine will return to direct both operas.

Mozart's beloved comedy The Magic Flute will return for 10 performances beginning February 14 and running through March 20. Soprano Maria D'Amato, who has been a favorite Sarasota Opera Studio Artist, will return as a principal artist to sing Pamina. Tenor Joshua Kohl, whose family lives in Palmetto will make his debut with the company as Prince Tamino. Sean Anderson, last heard in Sarasota as Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte will sing the comic birdcatcher Papageno. A favorite Sarasota Opera artist, bass Young-Bok Kim, who has sung the title role of Verdi's Attila, as well as in last season's The Barber of Seville, will return to the role of his 2004 debut with the company when his sings Sarastro. Lindsay Ohse, who was an apprentice artist with Sarasota Opera last season will sing the role of the Queen of the Night. Conductor Robert Tweten will make his debut with this production as will stage director Allison Grant. Sets are by Troy Hourie.

Hansel and Gretel opens February 26 for six performances through March 13. Hansel and Gretel is the familiar tale of the two mischievous children who outwit a wicked witch. In an effort to appeal to all audiences, of all ages, Sarasota Opera will break with its usual practice and present this family favorite in English. Heather Johnson who debuted with the company last season, will return as Hansel. Angela Mortellaro will make her company debut as Gretel. The Witch will be sung by soprano Stella Zambalis, who was a critical and audience favorite when she sang Princess Eboli in Sarasota Opera's 2009 production of Don Carlos. Anthony Barrese, who has conducted The Marriage of Figaro and Lakmé with Sarasota Opera returns to conduct. Jeffrey Marc Buchman, who was stage director of Sarasota Opera's Apprentice Program last season will be the stage director and the choreographer will be Diane Partington. The sets were designed David P. Gordon.

Sarasota Opera's Verdi Cycle and Masterwork Revival Series will return on March 6 when the company presents six performances of Verdi's rarely heard Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc). The work will be conducted by Victor DeRenzi and include debuting soprano Cristina Castaldi in the title role. Tenor Rafael Dávila will return to sing Carlo and baritone Marco Nisticò will play her father Giacomo. The production will be directed by Martha Collins with sets by Jeffrey W. Dean.
