Couples Most Likely to Get Engaged Before Christmas

Many couples get married as the weather gets colder so they can celebrate with family and friends at Christmas when everyone gets together.

Sydney, Australia, October 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Three in ten couples get engaged in the three months before Christmas, with November the peak month for engagements.

The online Engagement Survey of 310 respondents, conducted by Elizabeth Ball of It's In The Stars at http://www.itsinthestarsonline.com found that 30.8% of couples became engaged during autumn, with the most popular months being November (12.4%) and September (11.7%).

More than a quarter (25.8%) agreed to marry during winter, with Christmas in December (10.1%) making people even keener to propose than February (8.3%) when Valentines Day falls. The least popular months for getting engaged are March and May (5.7%).

"You're much more likely to get engaged then because the colder weather forces you to stay inside and to get to know each other. When you have less outside distractions - literally - you can start to understand each other, and imagine a real future together," said Elizabeth.

"Plus, it makes sense to celebrate your engagement news with family and friends at Christmastime when everyone gets together."

The survey found over half (54.4%) of the Generation X respondents (those aged 31-43) dated for less than two years before they got engaged, compared to only 35.5% of Generation Y (aged 18-30). Of these, 21.4% of
Gen Xers dated for less than 12 months before they became engaged, compared to only 8.4% of Gen Ys.

"Gen Xers get married faster because they've been dating for longer. Most of them 'just know' when they meet The One. Gen Ys take longer because it could be too early for them to marry - or to recognise what you need to have for a successful relationship," said Elizabeth.

The survey also found that Gen-Ys intend to have many more pre-wedding social occasions than Gen Xers.

The Gen Ys outnumber the Gen Xers for bridal showers (84.2% vs 65.3%), hen’s and buck’s nights (54.9% vs 45.8%), and engagement parties (53.2% vs 45.9%). Only Gen Xers outnumber their younger counterparts in having the relatively cheaper kitchen teas (12.2% vs 5.8%) and family dinners (7.1% vs 0.5%).

Elizabeth predicts many newly-engaged couples will be checking out jewellery stores, honeymoon destinations, wedding reception venues and gift registries in November.
