Wolf Awareness Week is October 11th-17th

Wolf Awareness Week is here! What better time to learn more about the impact these animals have on our environment? Sylvan Dell Publishing's One Wolf Howls, offers young readers the opportunity to explore the wolf's natural habitat while practicing counting skills.

Mount Pleasant, SC, October 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- We’ve all heard the well-known fairytale of the “big bad wolf” and are familiar with the notion of wolves as terrifying, man-eating creatures…but how realistic are these depictions? Did you know that wolves are actually very shy animals and that they are vital to keeping a balanced ecosystem? Wolf Awareness Week is October 11 - 17, and what better way to encourage respect for the wolf community than by allowing Scotti Cohn to take you deep into the wolf world in her book, One Wolf Howls?

Wolf Awareness Week became a national event in 1996 and is celebrated every third week in October. The goals for Wolf Awareness Week are to promote education about wolves and their vital impact in our ecosystem as well as to encourage conservation efforts for wildlife in general. This year is an important year for wolf conservation efforts as several states are petitioning to remove the wolf from its protected status. This October, join Sylvan Dell Publishing in taking part in this event by educating yourself and the children in your life with the help of One Wolf Howls.

Want to know how you can take part in Wolf Awareness Week? Here are some suggestions:

Revisit traditional story tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, or Peter and the Wolf. Afterwards discuss with your children how these stories unrealistically depict wolves as dangerous and evil.
Have your children draw pictures of wolves to decorate walls.
Check out the For Creative Minds section in the back of One Wolf Howls for more educational activities.

One Wolf Howls (Sylvan Dell Publishing 2009), by Scotti Cohn, takes young readers deep into the realm of the wolf community. Each page represents a different month of the year, and Susan Detwiler’s illustrations depict the majestic beauty of these wolves and their natural habitat. Cohn’s poetry familiarizes children with the months of the year and allows them to practice their counting skills. For more information about this book, view its homepage at sylvandellpublishing.com/Wolf.php. During this year’s Wolf Awareness Week do your part to instill respect and admiration for these intelligent creatures in your life and in the lives of others.
