Don’t Become a Chimney Fire Statistic in 2009 Let MKFireplaces Service Your Fire and Chimney

As Milton Keynes sees the incidence of chimney fires increasing in 2009 over the same period in 2008 it is time to take notice of stark warnings being issued by the local fire department.

Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom, October 16, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In the current economic climate many families are returning to traditional values and open fires are a cosy way to keep out the winter chills.

The heat is being turned on users of open fires and wood burners with the fire service issuing warnings over the dangers of chimney fires.

Mark Lloyd of MKFireplaces knows only too well the devastation this can cause. As a fireplace consultant to Milton Keynes and surrounding counties for the last 16 years MKFireplaces is only too aware of the dangers.

Have your chimney swept at least once a year – and at least twice a year if you burn wood.

If you have recently opened up and started to use a fireplace, make sure it is inspected by a qualified person, all MKFireplace engineers are fully qualified and are Gas Safe Registered.

A few simple bits of advice

- When burning wood, use only dry, seasoned woods.

- Build smaller, hotter fires that burn more completely and produce less smoke.

- Never burn cardboard boxes or waste paper.

- Do not overload the grate or appliance.

- Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires.

- Inspect your chimney breast, particularly in the roof space. Make sure that it is sound and that the sparks or fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks.

- Consider having a carbon monoxide detector fitted.

- Extinguish the fire before going to bed or leaving the house.

- Ensure wood burners are installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

- Make sure the appliance receives enough air to allow the fuel to burn properly.
