" Mr. Scrooge" to Kick Off Nine O’clock Players Theatre for Children's 80th Fall Season

Los Angeles, CA, October 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Assistance League of Southern California Nine O’Clock Players Theatre for Children opens its 80th fall season with the timeless production of Mr. Scrooge. This classic tale teaches us to value the people in our lives above money or material possessions. Noted producer Conroy Kanter, who made the acclaimed "Saving Angelo" with Kevin Bacon, makes her singing debut in the production.

The play opens on Christmas Eve in London, England, in 1871 outside the office of Ebenezer Scrooge who considers it a waste of time to celebrate Christmas. His focus is solely on money. In contrast, we meet his poor but happy clerk Bob Cratchit and his family, including his frail son, Tiny Tim. Despite their kindness to Scrooge, “Bah, humbug” is what they hear from him. Three spirits visit Scrooge that night, revealing to him what a greedy miser he has become and the fate he will suffer if he doesn’t change.

Theatre for Children is operated and supported by volunteer members of the Nine O’Clock Players (NOP) Auxiliary, and it is one of the oldest theatres for children in the country. The NOPs present two exceptional stage plays each year that are chosen from classic children’s literature and include a full complement of dancing, singing and special effects. Productions are offered to school groups as part of their curricula and to families on weekends. Teachers Guides that are written by the Nine O’Clock Players give teachers and children the opportunity to discuss the characters, meaning and details of the plays and introduce the joy of live theatre to young theatre-goers.

Of the 19,000 children who attended last year, approximately one third were economically or physically disadvantaged, and the NOPs provide both bus transportation and admission free-of-charge to these youngsters. After each show, young audience members are treated to a special meet-and-greet where the cast signs autographs and have their photos taken.
