Enable America Honors Companies for Disability Mentoring

Enable America, the non-profit devoted to improving employment opportunities for people with disabilities, sends its thanks and congratulations to six Raleigh, North Carolina companies, as they begin mentoring programs. Those companies are Progress Energy, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes, Rex HealthCare, SAS and WRAL-TV.

Raleigh, NC, October 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- This week six prominent Raleigh organizations are launching disability employee mentoring programs, in conjunction with Enable America, a non-profit organization devoted to empowering people with disabilities to achieve independence through employment.

“We thank and congratulate these organizations for recognizing the value people with disabilities bring to the workplace,” said Richard Salem, founder and CEO of Enable America. “The opportunity to go to work, even for a single day, opens opportunities that are often elusive to those who have difficulty finding employment.”

Under the program, mentor companies provide on-the-job experience to people with disabilities. One of the companies participating is Progress Energy, which has joined Enable America as its local partner in expanding operations in North Carolina.

“We hope that other businesses in the Raleigh area will consider working with Enable America, and serve as host companies for the disability mentoring program,” said John McArthur, executive vice president of Progress Energy. “We believe local businesses will benefit by raising the awareness of the diverse talents of people with disabilities and helping bridge the gap between those who want to work and those who want to hire.”

Other companies that will also offer mentoring this week are Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes, Rex HealthCare, SAS and WRAL-TV.

Last week Enable America celebrated the 10th anniversary of Disability Mentoring Day, an event founded by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), with a breakfast meeting at Raleigh’s Marriott City Center. For the past year Enable America has been working to expand program offerings in Raleigh and Eastern North Carolina. Governor Bev Perdue is among those welcoming the organization’s latest efforts.

“Enable America has a distinguished record of helping people with disabilities,” Gov. Perdue said. “Increasing North Carolina’s employment rate for all people, especially for those with disabilities, is vital to the economic future of our state. Enable America’s dedication and expertise in this area is needed and welcome.”

In addition to employee mentoring, Enable America will also offer other services throughout North Carolina, all designed to improve job opportunities. Those include community connection forums, designed to bring local leaders, lawmakers, employers and service providers together to learn and share success stories. These meetings are an important step in building a bridge between those with disabilities, and their community.

Other successful programs launched by Enable America include VetConnect, dedicated to helping wounded warriors re-acclimate to civilian life, by pairing them with veterans who have faced similar challenges. Since 2007, more than 200 wounded warriors and their families have been served by VetConnect mentors across the country.
