State-Touring Exhibit Featuring Local Artists Opens Friday at Erie Art Museum

Erie, PA, September 30, 2006 --(PR.com)-- An exhibit of Pennsylvania artists that includes six individuals currently working in or originally from Northwestern Pennsylvania opens Friday, October 6 in the Erie Art Museum Main Floor Gallery.

“Outside the Centers/On the Edge” celebrates the strength and innovation of Pennsylvania artists living and working outside the state’s major metropolitan areas. NWPA’s own Lisa Austin, Daniel Burke, David T. Collins, Suzanne Farris, Amara Geffen and Robert Raczka are all featured in this exhibit.

The exhibition presents the work of 15 Pennsylvania artists, including the people mentioned above.  Each artist takes an unconventional approach to his or her work in materials, content and form. Their works demonstrate that just because the perspectives of these artists are influenced by their more “remote” locales they do not lack formal sophistication or theoretical rigor.

“Outside the Centers/On the Edge” is currently touring the state, reaching the halfway point at the Erie Art Museum. It was organized by a consortium of Pennsylvania museums and university galleries, with the support of the Picture Pennsylvania Traveling Exhibition program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. The exhibition was co-curated by their directors: Erie Art Museum (John Vanco); Pennsylvania College of Art and Design Gallery (Kristy Krivitsky); Samek Art Gallery, Bucknell University (Dan Mills); Sharadin Art Gallery, Kutztown University (Dan Talley); and Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (Michael Tomor). The Erie Art Museum exhibition program is supported by a grant from the Erie Arts Endowment.

The Erie Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Cost is $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and $2 for children under 12.  The Museum is free to all on Wendesdays. For more information on this or any other exhibit contact the Erie Art Museum at (814) 459-5477 or www.erieartmuseum.org.
