Men Yet to Shop Online for Christmas Gifts, Ignore Gift Services

Twice as many men as women have never shopped online for gifts, and they are less likely than women to use gift suggestions and time-saving gift services, according to a new online survey by astrology gift report company, It’s In The Stars.

Sydney, Australia, November 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Twice as many men as women have never shopped online for gifts, and they are less likely than women to use gift suggestions and time-saving gift services, according to a new online survey by astrology gift report company, It’s In The Stars.

The Christmas gifts survey of 157 respondents, by personalised astrology gift report company It’s In The Stars at http://www.itsinthestarsonline.com found 45.0% of men have never shopped for gifts online, compared to 23.9% of women.

“Many men rush into a department store and quickly grab something on Christmas Eve, but women prefer to receive something that’s thoughtful,” said Elizabeth Ball, director of It’s In The Stars.

The survey found 80.0% of men start Christmas gift shopping in November compared to 44.0% of women, yet most men ignore time-saving gift suggestions, and wrapping services. Only 35.3% of men (vs 51.9% of women) use gift suggestions, gift wrapping (11.8% vs 21.7%), and gift wishlists (11.8% vs 36.4%).

“As much as they tend to shop at the last-minute, they’re afraid of being accused that they don’t care so men are more likely than women to buy tangible gift cards (29.4% vs 48.1%), and gift certificates (23.5% vs 31.0%) than electronic gift certificates (17.6% vs 28.7%),” said Elizabeth.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents (65%) would spend $100 or more per child for Christmas gifts, while 57% would spend that on their partner. Most people would spend under $75 on their grandparents (84%), siblings (81%) and parents (62%), under $50 on friends (85%) and less than $25 on colleagues (80%).

Kris Kringles are unpopular with one in five respondents (20.5%), with 26.8% hating family Kris Kringles “with a passion because no thought has gone into the gift.” These lucky dip gift events are considered the “best idea ever” for work (41.9%) and considered “OK in some circumstances” for friends by 61.6%.

Across the three age groups, Generation Y (aged 18-30) will spend more this year on gifts online (23.9%), Gen X (aged 31-43) will spend the same amount online as last year (46.8%) while 35% of Baby Boomers (aged 44-64) haven’t bought gifts online yet.

The top five most popular gifts of Christmas 2008 were personalised gifts (24.3%), clothes/shoes/accessories/jewellery (20.3%), books/CDs/DVDs (16.2%), electronic gadgets (13.5%) and beauty/fragrance/health (12.8%).

The top three gifts for men were books/CDs/DVDs and electronic gadgets (30.0% each), and clothes (15.0%) while for women, their favourite gifts were personalised gifts (26.5%), clothes/shoes/accessories/jewellery (21.0%) and beauty/fragrance/health (14.8%).

Some people cleverly avoid the Christmas rush altogether, as 35.9% of Baby Boomers (35.9%) shop for gifts from January to September, followed by 27.3% of Gen XSers, and 23.4% of Gen Ys.
