Jim Murray Memorial Foundation Welcomes 2009 Scholarship Winners to LA

The Jim Murray Memorial Foundation (JMMF), an organization dedicated to furthering the educations of aspiring journalists, will welcome this year’s class of five “Murray Scholars” to Los Angeles on December 1st. A scholarship check presentation ceremony will take place at the Los Angeles Lakers vs. New Orleans Hornets game, Dec. 1, during halftime, center court, at Staples Center.

at Half-court at Staples Center Dec. 1.

The Jim Murray Memorial Foundation (JMMF), an organization dedicated to furthering the educations of aspiring journalists, will welcome this year’s class of five “Murray Scholars” to Los Angeles on December 1st. A scholarship check presentation ceremony will take place at the Los Angeles Lakers vs. New Orleans Hornets game, Dec. 1, during halftime, center court, at Staples Center.

“I am so grateful to the Lakers organization for its ongoing support of the JMMF, and for spotlighting our Murray Scholars during this Lakers’ 50th season in LA. Jim Murray traveled with the Lakers in those early years, and wrote hundreds of columns on the Lakers, from Jerry West and Elgin Baylor to Shaq and Kobe.” said Linda McCoy-Murray, widow of the late, great Los Angeles Times sports columnist. “There are still an overwhelming number of Jim Murray fans in LA, southern California, and around the country.”

This year’s Class of “Murray Scholars” being honored: Alyssa Rainbolt (University of Kansas), Amanda Anderson (University of Maryland), Andrew Pentis (Arizona State University), Charlie Specht (St. Bonaventure University) and Denise Poventud (Trinity College-Hartford).

The 2009 scholarship winners were selected by a panel of essay judges: Sam Farmer (Los Angeles Times), Bob Ford (Philadelphia Inquirer), Nancy Gay (FanHouse.com NFL), Tom Keegan (Lawrence, KS Journal World) and Jay Privman (Daily Racing Form).

As of 2009, 68 "Murray Scholars" have each received a $5,000 journalism scholarship through a national essay competition. A previous winner, SI.com writer, Arash Markazi, (2002 USC) is the first "Murray Scholar" to serve on the JMMF Board of Directors.

About the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation

The JMMF honors the legacy of Los Angeles Times Pulitzer Prize-winning sports columnist, Jim Murray, who passed away in August 1998. The Foundation’s goal is to raise funds to provide scholarships for second and third-year undergraduate journalism students who are pursuing a writing career.
