Rosendin Electric’s Risk Management Team Receives Prestigious Safety Award from International Risk Management Institute

Gary E. Bird Horizon Award Presented for Dramatic Results in Effective Loss Control Program and Creating Corporate Culture Focused on Safety

San Jose, CA, November 19, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Rosendin Electric (www.rosendin.com), one of the nation’s top five electrical contractors and a 100 percent employee-owned company, has received the International Risk Management Institute’s (IRMI) prestigious Gary E. Bird Horizon Award. Rosendin Electric was recognized for its outstanding safety program and its ability to create a corporate culture in which “safety is everyone’s responsibility.” The award was presented to Rosendin Electric’s chairman and CEO Tom Sorley, and risk management team members Sharon Barowsky, Risk Control Manager, and Marty Rouse, Vice President, Safety, at the recent 29th IRMI Construction Risk Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Gary E. Bird Horizon Award is presented annually by IRMI to recognize commitment to improving construction risk management techniques through the implementation of innovative, cost-effective, and efficient risk management techniques. Rosendin Electric’s program, Loss Management with L.O.V.E.: Living Our Values Every Day, has engendered a safety culture at the company, reducing worker’s compensation claim costs by 56 percent from 2006 to 2008, even though the number of man-hours worked increased by 51 percent. According to Barowsky, the number of lost day cases went from 19 in 2006 to three in 2008, and there have been no lost day cases to date in 2009.

“Improving our safety rating affects everything we do,” said Barowsky. “It’s not just about keeping our employees safe on the job. Improving safety affects claim costs, insurance costs, and our experience modification rate. Creating a culture dedicated to employee safety isn’t just beneficial to Rosendin Electric employees; it is the right way to conduct business.”

“We want to create a culture where our employees value safety in the same light as they value their family,” said Rouse. “We believe the two go hand in hand. If we value our family, then the greatest thing we can do for them is to value our personal safety. By working safely because it’s the right thing to do and not because someone is telling us to do so, we take ownership. Everyone has ownership and everyone is responsible for safety at Rosendin Electric.”

Rosendin Electric’s safety philosophy embraces five components that promote company-wide safety:

Orientation and I-3 Free Education – Injury, Incident, and Impact Free. This is a behavior-based safety presentation that explains why we need to look at safety as a value.
Apprentice Mentoring – working with a mentor to sign off on each aspect of the training program.
Employee Empowerment – Every employee receives a “Stop Work Card” signed by the CEO that empowers them to stop work if that worker or co-workers are at risk.
Participation in Safety Initiatives – All employees are required to participate in a stretch and flex initiative and Pre Task Plan (PTP) planning session at the beginning of their shift.
Return to Work/Lost Day Prevention – Superintendents work together to identify “return to work” opportunities, and there is a partnership between the medical community, insurance carriers, and corporate claims to speed return to work with duties appropriate for the level of injury.

The IRMI panel of expert judges had high praise for the Rosendin Electric program: “This is an outstanding program! The organization took a very comprehensive, proactive approach that could be easily used by others in the construction industry,” offered one judge.

“The beauty of our five-component program is that any organization can replicate it,” said Barowsky. “Perhaps what has made us so successful is that we built this program applying so many corporate perspectives – HR, safety, field management. This is a democratic risk management program with every sector of the company contributing.”
