Animal Lovers Vote to Give Away $100,000 to Shelters for Christmas

Seattle, WA, November 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Pet lovers throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean are coming together to give their favorite Petfinder.com animal shelter or rescue organization a very special Christmas. With $100,000 in cash grants to be awarded between now and December 23, including a $20,0000 Grand Prize, Christmas can be a little brighter for organizations struggling with a higher influx of adoptable pets even as donations drop.

Votes at The Animal Rescue Site (http://www.TheAnimalRescueSite.com) determine which groups will receive grants ranging from $1,000 to $20,000. More than 70 grants will be awarded including weekly prizes and prizes for the “Most Touching Story” from a shelter.

Two previous Shelter+ Challenges have helped small rural rescue organizations and big city shelters reach out to their supporters and even make some new friends on the Internet. One Golden Retriever rescue group in Tennessee reported that they had e-mails from voters as far away as Ireland congratulating them on their win.

“It was an amazing event for a small community like ours,” said Jeri Dreyer of the Denison City Pound (Iowa state winner in the 2009 Spring Shelter+ Challenge and third in the nation in the current Challenge as of November 23). “I never dreamed we could get the whole area so excited and involved in an online voting frenzy like we had here. It also brought so much attention to our animal facility that it helped in placing pets in their new homes.”

The current Shelter+ Challenge began on September 14 and millions of votes have been cast so far. Individuals will be able to vote daily for their favorite group until December 20. Final winners, including the Grand Prize of $20,000, will be announced on December 23, 2009.
