Richly Romantic String Seduction

New England String Ensemble principal players beguile with Rossini, Kodaly, Dvorak.

Wakefield, MA, October 19, 2006 --(PR.com)-- New England String Ensemble’s Principal Players delight the senses in a soul-stirring program of escalating forces led by founding Concertmaster Gregory Vitale. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience the orchestra’s virtuosity in an intimate chamber setting both in Boston and the Merrimac Valley.

Concerts take place at 7:30pm on Saturday, November 4 at West Parish Church in Andover, and 7:30pm on Sunday, November 5 at First Church, Unitarian in Boston.

The program will begin with Rossini’s virtuosic Duetto in D for Cello and Double Bass performed by principal cellist Joshua Gordon and principal bassist Susan Hagen.

Cellist Joshua Gordon joined the Lydian String Quartet and the faculty of Brandeis University in 2002. He is an alumnus of the Juilliard School and the Tanglewood Music Center; his principal teachers were Harvey Shapiro, Joel Krosnick, and the Juilliard Quartet, with whom he appeared on the PBS program "Live From Lincoln Center: Juilliard at 80." He has been acclaimed for his work as a soloist and chamber musician in concert halls, festivals, and broadcasts across the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, South America and the Caribbean.

Susan Hagen is a Boston native who received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Double Bass Performance from Boston University. Ms. Hagen’s solo engagements have included Giovanni Bottesini’s Grand Duo Concertante for Violin and Double Bass with her sister, violinist Jodi Hagen, and the Salem Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bottesini Concerto No. 2 and Reverie with the Nashua Chamber Orchestra. Susan is a substitute player with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Utah Symphony and performs regularly with many Boston area ensembles.

Following the Rossini is Kodaly’s tunefully intriguing Serenade for Two Violins and Viola performed by concertmaster Gregory Vitale, principal second violin Colin Davis and principal violist Jennifer Stirling. Bartok called Kodaly "the composer whose works are the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit."

In addition to five appearances as soloist with the New England String Ensemble, founding concertmaster Gregory Vitale has performed as a soloist with Landmarks Orchestra Triptych, the Brookline Symphony, the Cascade Festival Orchestra, and the Nashua Chamber Orchestra. At an early age, Greg won first prize in the New England Conservatory Solo Competition, and he was a semifinalist in the ARTS Competition. His past teachers include Josef Gingold, Denes Zsigmondy, Charles Castleman and Stephanie Chase. His mother, Sheila, is a member of NESE and the Boston Ballet, while his father, Michael, is retired from the Boston Symphony.

Colin Davis studied at the Royal College of Music in London and was a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra for two years before he immigrated to the United States in 1989. Since that time, he has performed frequently with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Ballet, the Harvard Chamber Orchestra, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, the Lyric Opera Company, and the Opera Company of Boston. Davis is a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, and a founding member of the New England String Ensemble

Jennifer Stirling is a member of the chamber group SARASA, the Triptych String Trio, the orchestras of the Handel and Haydn Society and Emmanuel Music. A dedicated teacher and chamber music coach, she taught at Phillips Exeter Academy for fifteen years, holds a large private studio, and is on the faculty at the Concord Academy. An avid chamber musician, Jennifer serves as a board member for the ACMP-the Amateur Chamber Music Players-which supports and promotes the enjoyment of chamber music for players of all ages, in the US and abroad.

The program climaxes with all five players uniting in the richly romantic Quintet in G Major by Antonin Dvorak.
